Elroy, you have a second for this recommendation.

I know that historically Lugnet administration has maintained a fairly
laissez-faire, hands-off attitude towards the content of the postings here,
because that's what the community seems to want, but I have to say that it's not
a position I am strongly in favor of.  I'm an administrator at an unrelated
(non-brick) discussion forum with over 16,000 members worldwide.  We would have
stamped on a pissing match like this one fairly quickly, to avoid alienating and
wasting the time of 15,990 of the members (even if doing so upset the other 10).
We don't have a lot of rules at our forum, but we do expect a certain level of
respect to be demonstrated by our members towards one another, and if they're
consistently unable - or unwilling - to play by those rules, they aren't allowed
to play in our sandbox anymore.

Although I fully intend to ignore Eric as much as possible in future and wasn't
the one who brought this to Lugnet in the first place I have to give some advice
to you and others who complain about pointless flamewars: don't read them.

This concept of hiding the fights from sensitive eyes really disappoints me. I
would think that grown adults would be capable of ignoring thing a little
better[1]. What annoys me particularly is that the people who usually demand
such measures rarely post to the forums in the first place.

Although Eric has probably pushed the TOS in this case, I wouldn't be willing to
say he has actively broken them on this occassion. Although I would feel no
upset if Eric did get banned or if this thread did get locked I would feel
extremely disappointed that the level of free speech on Lugnet was damaged and I
would ask to have the thread unlocked and him reinstated.

Tim

[1] I am aware of the irony of this and realise I should be applying this advice
to myself but I have tried to after my initial annoyed outbursts and at least I
have the excuse of being directly involved.
