Sorry. I think I understand your confusion now.
I suggested the board scan because it means you don't have to have two
entry points into you program, and you don't have to explicitly tell
your robot whether it's playing first or second.
This could be advantageous when playing against the public because it
simplifies setup, and restarting of the game. The living player can
choose to play first or press the turn button to tell the robot to play
first. In this case doesn't mater what colour the robot is loaded with.
(I'm guessing people have realized that the colour of the chip is
inconsequential to being able to play the game.)
Your colour will be determined in advance of the start of play. You
will be able to setup your robot as necessary for which ever side you
will be playing.
