If I recall correctly, Blood Music was indeed a short story first, and then
was lengthened to a novel after the short storys success.

Ive only read a couple of full-length novels that were originally published as
short stories or novellas. Enders Game (Orson Scott Card) comes immediately to
mind (and Ive recently discovered a copy of the original novella at the local
library), but another lesser-known one is Nightfall (Asimov/Silverberg) which
was based on Asimovs original short story (and ended up being turned into a
positively embarassing travesty of a movie (I bear the stain upon my soul of having recomended this movie based on
the novel when a group of my friends and I were hunting for a video to watch in
college).
On the subject of genetic-themed sci-fi books, I tend to read a lot of the more
obscure authors, but one of my favorite sci-fi novels does have a somewhat
genetic-based premise. This Alien Shore, by C.S. Friedman, is set in a future
where humans have expanded across the galaxy only to discover that their
original means of FTL travel had the unfortunate side-effect of causing each
group of travelers to mutate in strange and often horrible ways. The result is
one of the most amazing spreads of alien life that Ive seen since the original
Star Wars trilogy...but theyre all descended from us.
