There was a situation in my past when a family member found 2500 dollars
(CDN so like 50 bucks for you Americans ;) ) in a parkinglot somewhere. He
did not put an ad in the paper, nor tell anyone about it ('xcept his
family). I personally would have done a few things in order to find the
legitimate owner of the bills, but, as I told him, that's just me.
In the news a few days ago, a woman went to the bank machine (after hours
for the bank) and noticed a bag o' bills on the ground outside the bank.
Turned out to be like 10,000 dollars (again, like 100 American dollars) that
the brinks security dropped whilst putting money in the bank machine (or
taking it out, who knows) and she brought it to the bank the next day. It
was in 'all the news' 'cause people were 'surprised' about the honesty and
integrity of the woman.
I heard a quotation once years ago, that you Yankees hold up two presidents,
George Washington for being so brave and honest for admitting the cherry
tree cutting, and Abe Lincoln for being so brave and honest (honest Abe).
The quotation went something like 'Isn't it amazing how we revere people for
just being honest, as if it doesn't happen all the time in our world?'
But this has nothing to do with anything, I'm just agreeing with jt.

| (...) The last two people I knew who had lost their wallets had them returned by complete strangers with nothing missing. It's not that uncommon!
