I do not like doing overseas deals because it requires a minimum of two
trips to the post office to do exact shipping. Who has time? Domestic I can
use my scale, a rate chart and quote shipping, but it's too variable
internationally (yes I have an international rate chart but still). I still
do ship internationally but I don't like it. Worse, receiving payment
internationally is a pain, even with PayPal. So you have to get it right and
you can't as easily just say "send me way over and I will refund you the
overage" because the refund took not one but two haircuts (one coming to me,
and one again on return to the buyer)

Why does it take two trips?

Dont the US post office have an on-line postal calculator?
Enter the weight, desintation, method of shipment and voila the price.

lawrence

Aye, there's the rub.  To enter the weight you have to know the weight.
Most people don't have more than a bathroom scale at home. I don't even like
that much inaccuracy to determine Priority weights to the nearest pound, and
it's virtually worthless for international where rates can vary widely every
few ounces.

I ended up buying a used 30 lb. baby scale.  Gets me reliably within 2
ounces or so.

The scale on the left is good up to 4 pounds, with resolution better than 1/10
ounce. Bug you local postmaster. Ask him where the regional (or district)
surplus postal equipment auctions are and contact them. Its a bit of work to
obtain these units, but my measured weights match those at the post office
better than 99% of the time. The big guy on the right is good up to 70 lbs.

(...) Reread your own message and see if you can determine why I think international is a pain in the butt. Domestic prio just needs to be accurate to 1/2 a pound. I have better than that already with my Pelouze. You want me to go to a postal (...) (23 years ago, 28-Jul-01, to lugnet.market.auction)
