This is what I think is happening here: Even though MB has nowhere near the
quality of product as Lego, they have improved somewhat over the years. At the
same time, there has been a perception among Lego fans that Lego quality has
been slipping.
When your company has a reputation for excellence in quality control and that
slips, you lose sales. When your company has a reputation for producing crap
and your products start getting slightly less crappy, you gain sales. Not to
mention the fact that during economic down times people have less money to spend
and therefore may be a bit more willing to forego quality for a lesser price,
and you have an even bigger problem.
That's my take on it, anyway.
