There's a piece in the _Financial Times_ about the latest restucturing at Lego:

or http://makeashorterlink.com/?U27F24DB7

Key quotes:

""This is our last chance. We are at risk of losing our independence," said
Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, Lego's chief executive and owner"

and

"Mr Kristiansen declined to speculate on whether the maker of the eponymous
coloured plastic building blocks could face a takeover should this latest
resuscitation attempt fail."

Ominous news.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

Now, before anyone howls that I'm just pouring salt on TLG's wounds, let's
reflect:  TLG is suffering massive losses while is casts about for the solutions
for its waning market share.  So what is MEGABLOKS doing right that TLG is doing
wrong?  Everyone "knows" that MB quality is vastly substandard, yet the company
gets stronger every year.  Will a return to TLG's core values help resuscitate
the brand?  Is it too late for such a return?  What if a competitor has already
taken the torch in the meantime?

Dave!

Do you know there is one good thing about all of this? Mega Bloks is a Canadian
company :D. I saw their products, they do stink, they are 'juniorized' but damn,
they do appeal more to kids. When I saw the Dragons sets from Mega Bloks on
display, I wanted to get thise set so badly but I know closer look reveals large
pieces and poor quality.
I don't know what Lego should do. They should have listened earlier to the Lego
community. I'm glad this is happening because it wakes them up.

(...) The actual quality isn't as bad as some people seem to think, but there has indeed been juniorization in MEGABLOKS--almost as long as in LEGO sets. Unlike LEGO, MEGABLOKS usually (though not always) offsets the juniorization with generous (...) (20 years ago, 18-Mar-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.off-topic.clone-brands)
