Hi all,
Rather than dip into the very icy waters of military might discussions ( in which
I'm sure I couldn't hold up my end) , I thought I'd try to limit my comments to
weapons, lego and mecha as they relate to each other, and maybe I'll have some
success.
I'm saddened that a whole branch of building is determined to be forbidden in
David's home, because of a few unwanted things. By the same token, one might well
avoid space-, western-, pirates-, castle- and even town-themed (with police, jails
(what exactly did they do to get in jail?) sets and MOCs. I really am serious,
since each of these themes are equally prone to possible violent situations and
therefore play, and yet, I have an eight-year-old child, so I understand the
reasons for selective censorship.
Now, to make sure, I checked my own site (
http://www10.ewebcity.com/dadoandrabbit/lego/mecha.htm ) to convince myself that I
had not posted any mecha posing with weapons (although I admit to having built a
few in my time-- including a life-size flintlock pistol replica), and (whew! safe
for tots) I hadn't. I'm not as strict about it as some who post here-- I know a few
other AFOLs who have stated directly that they make only non-violent creations
(Eric Sophie for one, if I remember correctly) and I respect and applaud that. As a
critical, fully self-aware adult, however, I also enjoy the privelege to view
military-themed creations if I so choose.
I enjoy the mulitplicity of themes available now as compared to when I was 10, and
though I have felt a slight regret at the inclusion of pistols and rifles in some
of my son's sets, I would rather he played out aggression than act it out for real.
My gosh, I made my first MOC Millenium Falcon around 1981-- to me, it was cool,
'cause it shot the bad guys!
What's the solution for David and his son? I would suggest perhaps previewing
sites, including Brickshelf, without him, and then later, they can look at the
appropriate ones together. That way, they don't have to avoid anything wholesale.

| Speaking for myself - I have tried to stay away from building mecha - for the very reasons that Bobby mentions. A mecha without a weapon built from LEGO is a pretty cool thing. Especially some of the larger models seen on Brickshelf in the last few (...) (23 years ago, 31-Aug-01, to lugnet.build.mecha)
