My love affair with the 3x12 wedge slope continues:

Argent Supra

This came out a bit more old-school than I intended. And a lot bigger (it sort of strains the boundaries of whooshability!). It was originally going to be an all-silver spaceship like a Naboo starship, but I changed my mind - and conserved the lions’ share of the silver elements for another spaceship.

The landing gear is a bit fugly, but it is sturdy and extremely compact... so I left it as-is.

Cheers,

I like it, but... I think the printed slopes make it a little too busy. I think the design would look more cohesive if some of the slopes were Brassoed. For starters, I’d do one level of slopes on the front end, so the pattern isn’t repeated with 2 bricks height, and I’d also remove the printing on the inside leading edge of the wing. If that looks better, it might be worth seeing how those bare slopes look at your engine exhausts. If the larger expanses of color help define the shape better, maybe it’s worth it to Brasso almost all of them.

Besides that, the shape looks very fast, and I love your engine details and use of chrome. The interior looks quite comfortable, and the loading ramp is a nice touch. The backdrop is excellent, a fantastic improvement over the white sheet! :)

More 3x12 wedge sloped MOCs to come, by the way... ;-)

I’m disagreeing with a few people here, but I don’t think that the printing makes it look too busy. Indeed, it was something I considered while building it, and in the end I decided that I preferred the detail level conferred, especially in the way it added some extra silver details to an already-partly-silver MOC.

It’s a purely aesthetic issue, I guess. I tend to dislike large expanses of featureless plastic, something I noticed with another MOC I’m currently working on, which uses a large number of unprinted red 3x12 wedges together... and they prevent a lot of detail arrangement that I would otherwise prefer. I don’t know, maybe you’ll like that MOC better!

Completion of the backdrop held up photography by a couple of weeks too. But it was worth it. :-)

Hey Paul! Very impressive design and excellent presentation (please tell me you’ll save that landing bay for future MOCs!). You definitely are the king of the 3 X 12 slopes. I’m still struggled with what to do with the 4 I have. Those engines are probably my favorite feature. They look both powerful yet elegant and add to the smooth, luxurious appeal of this craft. My only suggestion would be to maybe Brasso off the decals on some of the 3 x 12 slopes. Although you’ve used the slopes masterfully, I just think those slopes don’t work as well as the JSF slopes did in your Lance and Flame starships. The JSF slopes are more subtle and complimented your design while these are stronger and look a bit too busy and clutter up the smooth lines you have going. Oh man, a chrome version of this would have been expecially awesome! Anyway, great job. Keep ‘em coming! :)

The engines are my favourite detail too. They were the inspiration for the whole thing, they in turn developed around the use of the eight 3x12 wedges in a cone-like shape.

Thanks Dan. As I said to Bram, from an aesthetic point of view I preferred the sloping with printing on. Sounds weird, but I’m working on another MOC with unprinted wedges and frankly it looks a bit sparse, so reserve judgement until you see the flip side.

Chrome is expensive... :-( When I extrapolated the size of this ship, I realised that I’d have to make a different, smaller chrome ship...

Man..is that ever ‘out there’. To be honest, when I first saw it in the thumbnail I recoiled a little bit due to the lime green....truly one of the hardest colours for me to get my head around. A closer look however reveals that the spire formations on it seem to work with the outlandish colour scheme. The Bionicle/Racer bits in the engine cowling look excellent.

The only criticism I would have is the interior. For some reason, the ‘plain’ colours of black/red/gray don’t seem to fit the exterior. I would almost expect to see an all white interior with trans highlights or something. A minor personal taste.

Innovative as always Paul.

Thanks. I actually quite like this colour, and I used it in a smaller craft but wanted to try something more adventurous, and I made a conservative guess that a gaudy colour like lime-green would need a cool neutral like chrome to improve the overall scheme.

Well, I vetoed white as I didn’t want it as the interior decor colour scheme for a luxury craft... also, the belly of the foresection is effectively one element thick inside and out, to maximise the interior space... and the belly exterior is black for brick budgetary reasons, hence... black. Not sure what sort of use of trans highlights you were thinking of. if I’d organised the interior structure better, I might have been able to make it a different colour... *shrug*

Innovative as always Paul.

Thanks for the feedback!

Dang, Paul! Wow! You do stretch the limits of our imaginations.

I don’t really know what to say. Wow.

I dig that sloping up wing design. The color scheme is very in-your-face, but it works well. And those huge engines are really neat. Especially the intakes, with the pairs of wedges dividing it.

Only complaint is the interior- I’m sure you could squeeze a little more space into that big moc. And what happens when nature calls... there’s no toilet:)

Thanks! Yeah, I can’t get enough of those 8-sided clip plate thingys (The wedges are clipped onto those).

Gaah! I knew someone would mention that. Actually, there’s a zero-gee toilet compartment on one side of the exit bay (beneath the bed), but it’s so poorly appointed that I couldn’t bring myself to photograph it. The only flaw in an otherwise luxurious craft... :-(

That is a whole lot of lime there Paul!  What a cool looking ship.  I
especially like the integration of the Technic panels and the 2x4 wedge
plates that make up the front of the engines.

If I had one ever so slight negative comment, it would be to Brasso off all
those printed parts.  But that is really just me as I don't care for that
printed part.  In this situation it works well!

Now you need to get to work on a capitol size ship using lime.  :)

Yeah, that the cool 8-sided clippable part, I wish I knew what it was called! A lot of Exploriens sets had them in white. I wish I had more of them!

Yeah, I think I prefer them printed in this case. I’ve been working with unprinted versions on another MOC, and I didn’t like the sparseness...

Excellent work Paul!

Fantastic form and detailing. The landing gear also strikes my fancy. Yes it’s “fugly”, but it looks extremely functional and robust. I might have to look into that type of design when I get around to building spacecraft again.

I also agree with what others are saying; sans preprinted patterns this ship would look better.

Keep on building! :-)

Actually, I was thinking about using it for future spacecraft. I’m never too worried about what the landing gear look like, unless I have a cool idea for landing gear :-)

If it were any other colour than lime green, and if the printing hadn’t been largely silver, I might agree. As it is, I like the effect of the printing on a primarily lime green ship. *shrug*

Excellent Paul!

I can’t wait to see what you do with the silver. Usually I’d prefer that they had used stickers rather than printing on bricks, but I don’t mind the printing so much on this; it helps to break up the lime. I like how the metallic decal area ties in with the metallic technic fairings. I don’t have any of those 3 x 12s in lime, so I’m not sure about the other colours, but maybe some green and earthy colours would tie in with the accents on those wedges. But, hey, whatever; it’s a great MOC. I especially like the ‘radial’ work using wedge plates on the front of the outer engines.

Way to raise the bar.

Peace and lime,

Professor Whateverly

Hi,

perhaps you mean part #30033 “Plate 2 x 2 with Rod Frame Octagonal” ? I imagine you took this part and some clips to fix the wedges on it?

Don’t know how to insert pics here...:-( http://img.lugnet.com/ld/30033.gif

Btw. it’s an awesome looking ship! I’m a great fan of all Lego-Space-MOC’s although my tries to build some were a little bit poor and that’s why i prefer building train related stuff :-))

Greeting fellow Aussie... I’m not really a huge fan/builder of LEGO space (mainly for the knowledge and lack of building experience in that area)... but Steven Locke showed me this, and I totally agree with him :) very nice indeed and as I mentioned to him, I liked the combination of colours and how you used them. Very cool, it’s actually quite a nice looking craft... and I have seen some in the past that really look like chunks of nothing... atleast this has some shape/design to it!

Thanks!!!

Thanks Bob - I tried to squeeze as much interior space into the design as I could. The main limitation was the lime-coloured elements at my disposal. I think it came out about right, though.

Yeah, the first two images were meant to be wallpaper if people liked them. I have some other larger wallpapers in another brickshelf folder:

Great MOC Paul! You really made lime work for me. And the metallic parts just rock with it. Great design and it still looks mighty swooshable to me!

Thanks Sylvia! I don’t think the lime would have looked very good without the silver (especially with that silver printing on the slopes!). Oh, and it looks more swooshable in the photos than when you try to pick it up in RL - this thing is pretty big (~60cm long?). As I said, I hadn’t meant ot make it that big, it’s just that the size of the engines coupled with the ideal proportions sort of dictated the size of the whole thing.

Cheers,

This came out a bit more old-school than I intended. And a lot bigger (it sort of strains the boundaries of whooshability!). It was originally going to be an all-silver spaceship like a Naboo starship, but I changed my mind - and conserved the lions’ share of the silver elements for another spaceship.

The landing gear is a bit fugly, but it is sturdy and extremely compact... so I left it as-is.

Cheers,

Very awesome. I love the rear, the orange tips around the engines really works well. It goes against the grain with the lime green color but I think anything goes in space.

Nice work.

Thanks Pat. I wanted to find an application for the lime green I’d accumulated - with the purchase of a pile of cheap 3x12 lime green wedges on Bricklink, the project sort of presented itself. At the end of the day, I think it would have looked much, much better in red - but I’d already used my red 3x12 slopes for another work which is still in progress (and that work would not look correct in lime green).

Cheers,

Wholly Lima beans! This is supra cool!

I thinks the painted slopes are fine, except for the orange surfaces. (IMO)

The engines are way cool and the overall shape is terrific. A+

Fair enough - there’s been a range of opinions on the printing :-) I can honestly say that I’m quite satisfied with how that part turned out. I prefer a certain amount of surface detail, large plain surfaces generally bug me on a spaceship MOC.

Thanks. The engines inspired the whole thing, really. The shape is a bit old-school, I think. But still a nice shape.

From left to right: Takis Sparkling Shiraz, Titan Chilli Red and Raspberry Lemonade. Julius Winter doesn’t have particularly good taste in beverages (alcoholic or otherwise).

Wow, way cool. I don’t know if I can add much more to what has already been said. I do like the color-scheme and the printing on the pannels does not bother me too much. Looks like it would be a super-fast; better watch out for space pirates. This looks like the type of ship they’ed like to capture and convert into a smuggling ship.

One thing that strikes me is how much the cockpit section reminds me of the head of a snake... kinda like a cobra or something.

Again, an uber-cool creation.

Well, it’s funny you mention that because Julius’ brother IS a space pirate... building his ship is some ways off though.

WOW. These (http://www.lugnet.com/~164/sci-fi) really make me want to pull out my legos and build again. I am curious, what is your process?

Do you draw on paper then use LDraw or something similar to design and then build? Do you buy sets to get the parts you need, or do you buy bags of specific parts?

The galvenon really makes me feel like building, because I haven’t really bought a set in a few years, so most of my legos are really old school. So I don’t have the parts to building stuff like the Supra.

These ships are just awesome.

That’s the main reason I post. Good to hear!

I’ve occasionally sketched a MOC beforehand, and I build with a supply of parts both from sets (which encourage new ideas) and from Bricklink (which facilitates existing ideas). I tried LDraw but I found it too slow and cumbersome.

Mainly I build according to an initial idea, typically it will be a concept that appeals to me, like folding-out weaponry, fighter bays or giant engines. Then (and often separately) I will build some component doodads like engines, a cockpit area, or maybe some wing parts, and then I’ll spend a lot of time arranging the parts to find the most aesthetically-pleasing configuration which also fits the overall concept.

That’s the crucial part, and I think where a lot of people fall down. Their design method seems to involve making some extremely cool doodads which use parts cleverly, and then whack the lot together, overlooking (or even sacrificing) form and concept in the process. So it’ll have some really clever construction details, but the overall form or concept won’t actually be that exciting. It’ll be just another spaceship that happens to use parts cleverly. I don’t know about you, but that’s not enough to get me going. Execution is important, but I prefer form and concept. That’s why this is one of my favourite ships, even though it didn’t recieve much attention:

I just found it visually and conceptually really inspiring. Building a similar ship is definitely in my plans.

Clever construction methods are reputed to be a result of necessity, but frankly in my case they’re just the result of having the luxury of a large collection. I’m sure you could build something which looked just as cool from classic space parts.

WOW

Thanks Mike. I look forward to seeing the ships you make when you pull out your legos and start building again...

Cheers,

That ship has a very unique shape. I am interested to see what you do with it.

Unfortunately it may still be a bit before I get anything up here. I have a seven week old son at home. Work, sleep and the baby take up most of my time. I am really looking forward to the day I can introduce him to legos. :)
