My love affair with the 3x12 wedge slope continues:
Argent
Supra
This came out a bit more old-school than I intended. And a lot bigger (it sort
of strains the boundaries of whooshability!). It was originally going to be an
all-silver spaceship like a Naboo starship, but I changed my mind - and
conserved the lions share of the silver elements for another spaceship.
The landing gear is a bit fugly, but it is sturdy and extremely compact... so
I left it as-is.

I like it, but... I think the printed slopes make it a little too busy. I think
the design would look more cohesive if some of the slopes were Brassoed. For
starters, Id do one level of slopes on the front end, so the pattern isnt
repeated with 2 bricks height, and Id also remove the printing on the inside
leading edge of the wing. If that looks better, it might be worth seeing how
those bare slopes look at your engine exhausts. If the larger expanses of color
help define the shape better, maybe its worth it to Brasso almost all of them.
Besides that, the shape looks very fast, and I love your engine details and use
of chrome. The interior looks quite comfortable, and the loading ramp is a nice
touch. The backdrop is excellent, a fantastic improvement over the white sheet!

Hey Paul! Very impressive design and excellent presentation (please tell me
youll save that landing bay for future MOCs!). You definitely are the king of
the 3 X 12 slopes. Im still struggled with what to do with the 4 I have. Those
engines are probably my favorite feature. They look both powerful yet elegant
and add to the smooth, luxurious appeal of this craft. My only suggestion would
be to maybe Brasso off the decals on some of the 3 x 12 slopes. Although youve
used the slopes masterfully, I just think those slopes dont work as well as the
JSF slopes did in your Lance and Flame starships. The JSF slopes are more subtle
and complimented your design while these are stronger and look a bit too busy
and clutter up the smooth lines you have going. Oh man, a chrome version of this
would have been expecially awesome! Anyway, great job. Keep em coming! :)

Man..is that ever out there. To be honest, when I first saw it in the
thumbnail I recoiled a little bit due to the lime green....truly one of the
hardest colours for me to get my head around. A closer look however reveals
that the spire formations on it seem to work with the outlandish colour scheme.
The Bionicle/Racer bits in the engine cowling look excellent.
The only criticism I would have is the interior. For some reason, the plain
colours of black/red/gray dont seem to fit the exterior. I would almost expect
to see an all white interior with trans highlights or something. A minor
personal taste.

Dang, Paul! Wow! You do stretch the limits of our imaginations.
I dont really know what to say. Wow.
I dig that sloping up wing design. The color scheme is very in-your-face, but
it works well. And those huge engines are really neat. Especially the intakes,
with the pairs of wedges dividing it.
Only complaint is the interior- Im sure you could squeeze a little more space
into that big moc. And what happens when nature calls... theres no toilet:)

|
|
That is a whole lot of lime there Paul! What a cool looking ship. I
especially like the integration of the Technic panels and the 2x4 wedge
plates that make up the front of the engines.
If I had one ever so slight negative comment, it would be to Brasso off all
those printed parts. But that is really just me as I don't care for that
printed part. In this situation it works well!
Now you need to get to work on a capitol size ship using lime. :)

Excellent Paul!
I cant wait to see what you do with the silver. Usually Id prefer that they
had used stickers rather than printing on bricks, but I dont mind the printing
so much on this; it helps to break up the lime. I like how the metallic decal
area ties in with the metallic technic fairings. I dont have any of those 3 x
12s in lime, so Im not sure about the other colours, but maybe some green and
earthy colours would tie in with the accents on those wedges. But, hey,
whatever; its a great MOC. I especially like the radial work using wedge
plates on the front of the outer engines.
Way to raise the bar.

Im disagreeing with a few people here, but I dont think that the printing
makes it look too busy. Indeed, it was something I considered while building it,
and in the end I decided that I preferred the detail level conferred, especially
in the way it added some extra silver details to an already-partly-silver MOC.
Its a purely aesthetic issue, I guess. I tend to dislike large expanses of
featureless plastic, something I noticed with another MOC Im currently working
on, which uses a large number of unprinted red 3x12 wedges together... and they
prevent a lot of detail arrangement that I would otherwise prefer. I dont know,
maybe youll like that MOC better!

Thanks. I actually quite like this colour, and I used it in a smaller craft but
wanted to try something more adventurous, and I made a conservative guess that a
gaudy colour like lime-green would need a cool neutral like chrome to improve
the overall scheme.

Well, I vetoed white as I didnt want it as the interior decor colour scheme for
a luxury craft... also, the belly of the foresection is effectively one element
thick inside and out, to maximise the interior space... and the belly exterior
is black for brick budgetary reasons, hence... black. Not sure what sort of use
of trans highlights you were thinking of. if Id organised the interior

more swooshable in the photos than when you try to pick it up in RL - this thing

The galvenon really makes me feel like building, because I havent really bought

Ive occasionally sketched a MOC beforehand, and I build with a supply of parts
both from sets (which encourage new ideas) and from Bricklink (which facilitates
existing ideas). I tried LDraw but I found it too slow and cumbersome.
Mainly I build according to an initial idea, typically it will be a concept that
appeals to me, like folding-out weaponry, fighter bays or giant engines. Then
(and often separately) I will build some component doodads like engines, a
cockpit area, or maybe some wing parts, and then Ill spend a lot of time
arranging the parts to find the most aesthetically-pleasing configuration which
also fits the overall concept.
Thats the crucial part, and I think where a lot of people fall down. Their
design method seems to involve making some extremely cool doodads which use
parts cleverly, and then whack the lot together, overlooking (or even
sacrificing) form and concept in the process. So itll have some really clever
construction details, but the overall form or concept wont actually be that
exciting. Itll be just another spaceship that happens to use parts cleverly. I
dont know about you, but thats not enough to get me going. Execution is
important, but I prefer form and concept. Thats why this is one of my favourite
ships, even though it didnt recieve much attention:

I just found it visually and conceptually really inspiring. Building a similar
ship is definitely in my plans.

The galvenon really makes me feel like building, because I havent really
bought a set in a few years, so most of my legos are really old school. So
I dont have the parts to building stuff like the Supra.

Clever construction methods are reputed to be a result of necessity, but frankly
in my case theyre just the result of having the luxury of a large collection.
Im sure you could build something which looked just as cool from classic space
parts.

These ships are just awesome.
WOW

Thanks Mike. I look forward to seeing the ships you make when you pull out your
legos and start building again...
Cheers,

That ship has a very unique shape. I am interested to see what you do with it.

Unfortunately it may still be a bit before I get anything up here. I have a
seven week old son at home. Work, sleep and the baby take up most of my time.
I am really looking forward to the day I can introduce him to legos. :)
