Hi all,

it’s with a great deal of pride that I announce the first issue of

BrickJournal

BrickJournal is a quarterly publication that will focus on the AFOL community with articles about:
• People - the personalities of the community
• Building - the incredible models and creations that have been built
• Community - the places and events where AFOLs meet

BrickJournal will also invite the general public to meet and join the community. With a variety of articles on many of the aspects of the LEGO hobby, interviews with people who have impacted the hobby or community, building tips and instructions, and other fun things, BrickJournal will be an outreach to the public - introducing the LEGO hobby by showcasing the best the community has to offer!

Now you may wonder, what does this magazine look like?

Wonder no more.

Myself and the rest of the LEGOFan staff have been working closely with Joe
to help get the BrickJournal pages set up, so we have known about this
project for a while, but even so I have got to say once again "WOW!" (and I
have been saying this everytime I look at the magazine)

64 pages of articles all professionally produced and executed. This is an
amazing piece of work and one that every LEGO fan should appreciate.

Congratulations Joe - now go and catch up on your sleep!

Shazam! Congrats on a job well done. I found the HoB write up a particularly well written article ;)

Missing some key pictures though... :-) (1)

I knew this was coming too, and it was hard to keep quiet because it was pretty darn exciting. Now that it’s out I can say “wow” and “job well done” and “can’t hardly wait for Issue 2”...(2)

Joe’s pride is well placed, congratulations to the entire team.

1 - Well, maybe not, considering the target market. Let’s not scare the mundanes! 2 - and “better get busy on the next article I owe...”

Awesome! Stupendous! Bravo! Really nice job. I’ve downloaded the first issue and gotten 20 pages into it, and it’s hard to put it down (though I really do need to be working at the moment!).

My only regret is that it’s just a PDF -- I can’t comfortably read this, nor can I leave it lying around for my wife to pick up and flip through. (No, there’s no hope of her browsing the PDF.) Where can I buy a printed copy? Can anyone recommend some sort of print-on-demand service that would do this justice without costing an arm and a leg? (Where each limb is, say, ten bucks or so?)

Anyway, keep up the fantastic work, and thanks for this important contribution to the community. I really hope it thrives.

Best,
– Joe

This is my question too - altho slightly different. When will subscriptions be available? How much will they be? How can I sign up?

Awesome stuff Joe and team - Bravo! This is something the community could really use and I’m impressed that you guys have gone and done it. Bravo!

Agreed! I want something to carry around and read whenever.

Excellent work, team! What I imagined when a little birdie told me it was in the works and much more. Yippie hurray!

You should work on the picture quality, though. You need to get higher-res pictures in many cases.

Throw in another me too on publishing it in hard copy. I like how it is not just USA centered either.

Thanks - I’ve made comments about publishing on other posts, so I’ll just go straight to the next comment :-)

One of the goals that I want to meet with BrickJournal is to make everyone aware of the extent of the AFOL community. The community is not just the USA, it’s much more! And in future issues (yes, issues!) we’ll have reports from Europe and Japan!

Thanks again!

I suspect during PDF export they were crunched to save file space. For those of us hosting mirrors this is a good thing! :)

I’m sure the print version is much clearer.

Calum is indeed correct. We built the magazine using professional printing software (Adobe InDesign) at a full 300dpi for 8.5 x 11. Needless to say, that download is over 100 Mb.

As for all the other comments here, thank you so much. We are very excited about this as well. And believe me when I say all of the suggestions above have been brought up before. We decided to work on the magazine itself though and get a good finished product. Please keep the feedback coming.

Awesome stuff!

One suggestion, coming from someone who works in a copy center. I think this would be better if it were formatted for 8-1/2x11 paper instead of 11x17 paper. This would make printing out a copy a lot easier.

Lenny,

The staff of BrickJournal is reviewing options for printing and subscriptions. Right now, we are in the researching stage (to be honest, I wasn’t expecting to address this so soon), so I can’t give you a good answer. Once we determine our plan of action, I’ll announce here and on LEGOFan.

Thanks for the compliments!

I agree with the several people who have expressed an interest for a printed copy of Brick Journal. I’m more than willing to pay for a subscription that would come in the mail.

Oh yeah, thanks for including my picture in the first issue. (I’m the Celebration III ISD build team member with the black shirt.) I had no idea this project was even in the works, and then I’m in the 1st issue. SWEET!

I’m a me-too-er on the issue of print as well. I have a slow connection, plus don’t always check more than my email when online. (It’s a fluke I saw this thread.) If it came mailed in print form, I’d be less likely to miss it.

But I’m posting to add ask, hasn’t this sort of idea been mentioned before? A quick search reveals this:

http://news.lugnet.com/general/?n=40446

But the links therein seem to be dead.

I also seem to recall a thread (perhaps from that same source?) that asked for AFOLs to pre-subscribe by adding their name to a mailing list to get early dibs on issues. Naturally, I sent my name in, but sadly never heard any more. Was this (these) just an idea that has since become defunct (BJ excluded) ?

John,

In regards to your question about the previous ideas of doing a Lego magazine..Yes, this is not a new idea. It has been discussed before in various ways, but sadly until now none have come to fruition. It should be noted for the record that Brick Journal is in no way associated with what is formerly known as Bricks Magazine.

Thanks for the feedback,

Hendo, that was the infamous “Bricks Magazine” or something like that. That was sometime around Dec 2002-Feb 2003, organized by someone who has completely dropped off Lugnet. Rumors abound, and likewise, nobody got their money back.

The goal of BrickJournal was to produce a magazine first, make it in .pdf format so it could be downloaded, readable, be enjoyed, and nobody would have to pay a subscription up front (or worse--grumble that this project would be another Bricks Magazine). In essence, we wanted to prove it could be done and have something tangible first--

BJ: “we have a magazine we’re writing, you can subscribe first, and then we “promise” to have a magazine done...”

AFOL: “yeah, right... is this another “Bricks Magazine” endeavor? I lost my money then, what makes you think I’ll pay again?”

BJ: “Here’s our first issue!” and it’s FREE!!!

That last line is what BrickJournal is providing--proof!

Hi David,

You’re welcome :-) One of the things that’s in the masthead is community..and that picture showed the community!

As for printed copies, patience, young Skywalker....the staff is looking at options and will be making some plans and decisions pretty soon. When we do, we will announce it here and on LEGOFan!

Great job! Very well done and professional. You must have put a lot of time into it and it shows! Can’t wait to see the next issue! You did a great job of covering so many different aspects of such a diverse group as exsists here in the Lego world.

Bill,

Thanks! I want BrickJournal to appeal to as many people as possible, so I tried to get a spectrum of articles in, and I hope to have a diversity of articles in future issues. And I can’t wait to see next issue either :-)!

And for the record, it took five months to start this....

Very nice! It’s obvious y’all put a lot of time, thought, work, effort, blood, sweat, tears, etc. into this.
Just one question - what’s the easiest way to turn this download into an actual, printed booklet? Do places like Kinko’s offer 2-sided duplex printing? But, then, it’d cost like 35 bucks or more to print it. Maybe I’ll just read on-screen.

Just one question - what’s the easiest way to turn this download into an actual, printed booklet? Do places like Kinko’s offer 2-sided duplex printing? But, then, it’d cost like 35 bucks or more to print it. Maybe I’ll just read on-screen.
Congrats again!

James,

I wouldn’t encourage you to get it printed at Kinko’s..it’s not cheap.

We’re working on the printing options, so once we figure out a plan, we’ll announce it here and on LEGOFan!

Thanks for the kind words!

   Hi all,

it’s with a great deal of pride that I announce the first issue of

The final copy looks great Joe (et al). I know that you and a few other key players have spent endless hours pulling together such a wonderful creation. Your hard work has really paid off, imo. I would like to add that it was a pleasure being able to add a very tiny part to the overall finished piece. On a personal note, it was a nice surprise to see my micro-scaled Parliament Building on the BrickFest page as well, thank you.

Looking forward to the next issue.

Thanks! I’m happy that you were able to be a part of the first isssue too. Your article was among the first that I got that was a sign that something special was happening...I found myself wrapped up in it and also found that I couldn’t find any errors in proofreading :-)!

Hopefully BrickJournal will have many more nice surprises! And you’re welcome!

And I’m looking forward to the next issue too!

And printing is being looked into. More when we figure out a plan.

Well, whoever the retard was who posted that link should be shot. I’m personally going to go and hunt him down. That and the dumbkoff who karma whored direct links in a followup comment. I’m going to hunt that person down too and shoot him second. :)

On the other hand, I now can say I’ve personally found out what a heavy traffic load is like from the inside: I was logged onto Peach while it happened today. The disk was so busy, it took a minute to rename the brickjournal directory.

But remarkably it was handling the load really well. There were a lot of active connections but apache was threading properly and pfiles were doing okay. I pulled the plug about an hour in. The major concern for me was the University’s network operations center raising a red flag, which they’ve done on Brickfest/Brickcast broadcasts, fearing hacker attacks.

This was the impact of the link being posted to Slashdot...you can see the huge peak around 3-4PM as throngs of bored geeks started downloading the PDF.

exactly what it was designed for.

Just wondering though; is it intended to be a magazine for AFOLs or about AFOLs? If it’s the former, there’s not a lot in there that we don’t know already, and if it’s the latter, it should probably be marketed more at people other than AFOLs. But it’s an excellent beginning, and thanks for springing it on us without warning - it was such a nice surprise.

Thanks, Joe!

One of the challenges BrickJournal faces is trying to stay timely, given that I am making this quarterly. Because of the lengthy period between issues and the nature of the typical AFOL (wanting to find out things that are generally meant to be secret), BrickJournal is at a disadvantage in trying to get news scoops, and I have an expectation of some old information coming out...I just want it presented in a nice professional manner.

BrickJournal is perfect to be a more thorough place of information and reference for the AFOL. Imagine having a book that would be at your desk that would have info on a building method. Or a mag to show to a friend about the hobby....that’s the mag I wanted, and I sorta did it with the help of a lot of friends!

You do have the advantage of an inside line to the company though. Those are the bits I found most interesting. Stuff on the development of themes and models would be fascinating.

Allister,

My quick answer is: Yes!

Actually, BrickJournal is meant to be both a magazine for reference for AFOLs and a magazine for the general public to see and possibly join the community. It could be said that the mag is slightly schizophrenic, but basically what I want to say was, “Look at the great things the LEGO community does....want to join?”

After seeing the general reaction from those within the community and those outside, I can say that I was in the ballpark :-)

And if you’re wondering why I picked the articles I did (yes, it was my final decision), my criteria was to highlight the community - and The Rev. Brendan Powell Smith article was one of the first articles finished and put to bed because of not only the person, but the interview. Magnus Lauglo used a different angle for his article, and it became a fascinating read for me.

Thanks for the compliments! And there will be some more surprises:-)!

Ya. It was just a gentle ribbing, don’t take me too seriously. I love the Rev’s work. He is probably the current record holder for the Most Interviewed AFOL though. You should get him to actually write an article - that’d be worth reading.

I am in need of a large quantity of studless parts and gears
and am kicking myself for not buying the Mars Rover kits
when they were on sale at WalMart this Christmas for 25 bucks.

Long story short, did anyone stock up on them and save them
for a rainy day like this? If so, can I buy a couple of sets?

Please?

Hope everyone's Canada Day is going well, and congrats to everyone
in the charter issue of Joe Meno's new magazine!

Bad form, I know, but in the flurry of postings about
Chris's new ride, this might have got lost.

Or maybe everyone was at Janey's enjoying the SmallTown,
Ontario homecoming.

Or maybe everyone is busy building for Brickfest, which
is what I'm trying to do.

So I'm asking again...does anyone have some extra copies
of this set:

That was on sale at Walmart for 25 or 30 bucks around Christmas?

Name your price, I'd like 2 copies...

Cheers, Ralph

I am in need of a large quantity of studless parts and gears
and am kicking myself for not buying the Mars Rover kits
when they were on sale at WalMart this Christmas for 25 bucks.

Long story short, did anyone stock up on them and save them
for a rainy day like this? If so, can I buy a couple of sets?

Please?

Hope everyone's Canada Day is going well, and congrats to everyone
in the charter issue of Joe Meno's new magazine!

Cheers, Ralph
