It is the always the case in the UK, there is no equivalent to GATS. Some of the
local clubs do put on national size and quality shows but they do (and can do)
this purely because they have a large membership and a willing and active
organiser. The Model Railway Club (a local, London based club but with strong
links to many local clubs) used to run a big exhibition (do they still?) but
this again was organised in the same way, just bigger.
Outside of pure railway modelling shows there are companies that organise, the
Model Engineering Exhibition in its various forms is an example of this.

Waverly springs to mind, as does the York show (to which I have been once :).
IMREX used to be the big show in London, but I think I am dating myself by
saying so...I think Waverly is now the biggest single show.  There are shows put
on by specialist groups (ScaleForum, Scaleforum north), local shows (Wells), but
the common thing is that in the UK it is mostly a club organized thing.  Rather
vastly different than over here where GATS is the big player in the US show
market.  That being said, here in Victoria, the two local shows (Victoria and
Nainimo) are club organized not by a outside group.  V&S does the victoria show,
with a revenue split like a UK show, but generally less healthy in the cash box.
(we got just over 3000 people through in a one day show in September, the only
lego was the mindstorms controlling my Thomas layout...).

The model railway show in Toronto used to be organized by the clubs, but the
hobby show was a commerical group.  My Ontario group runs its own show every two
years (GBTS by the Platelayers Society)...in short, it is a odd mix up here.
