I have always been incredibly impressed by SCLTC tables. Heck, I am always
impressed by SCLTC layouts, too. All custom-built tables are impressive to some
degree.
Here at LUCNY, us crazy New Yorkers discuss building our own tables regularly,
but always decide against doing so. Instead, we just buy poly-resin 6-foot
banquet tables from retailers such as Lowes or Office Max. Whenever possible,
we use venue-provided tables and deal with the challenges and problems they may
present. When setting up tables for a show, we can typically have all of our
tables setup and in place within minutes. No bolts and wrenches required.
For us, building out own tables has too many drawbacks including the designing,
construction, and cost. No one wants to do the actual building of tables and no
one is willing to store the tables. Transporting tables is also an issue. The
ploy-resin tables are very lightweight and one person can carry two at a time
and fit easily into our current transport vehicles. The tables have myriad uses
at home between shows rather than being dedicated soley for club events, so that
is one benefit.
Basically with store-bought tables, exact standards are not practical. You
could call us all a bunch of hacks because we just figure stuff out without any
pre-planning. Our baseplates never completely fill the table surfaces and we
also have a tendency to have at least two places on our layouts where the
baseplates do not meet up properly. As easy-going as we are we simply do not
care all that much other than to say we hope to do better next time.
For those used to more exacting standards and club-built tables, what we do
might seem distateful, unattractive, etc. Perhaps. But we do public events to
have fun and so far we have always achieved that goal. Someday LUCNY may build
custom train tables, but I don't forsee that happening anytime soon.

If all we ever did with the tables was set them up at matching heights at a show and then lay LEGO on them, it would definitely NOT be worth it. What does make it (...) | (...) Funny you should mention that. I just bought 6 of that very type of banquet table for the traveling TCLTC layout yesterday ($41 each from Costco). | (...) SCLTC builds its own tables from 0.240 inch thick melamine coated hardboard and uses 1.910 inch diameter black ABS pipe for the legs. Both materials are cheap and readily available.
