Kevin-
I agree totally that making tables is -- or can be -- a lot of work. If all we
ever did with the tables was set them up at matching heights at a show and then
lay LEGO on them, it would definitely NOT be worth it. What does make it
worthwhile is the "system" approach. We can stack the tables with ABS pipe
separators and build the core of almost any terrain (while supporting track in
tunnels). This saves zillions of bricks and construction time. The holes that
join the tables also fasten the edge curtain and acyrlic sheets and signage (and
more recently, ocean surfaces). Making your own also provides the advantages
that they will always be the same (if that's what you want) and that you will
always be able to get them.
The labor, though, is ridiculous. Milling (cutting to size, dadoing, rabeting,
drilling, box jointing) is not too bad. It's the gluing and clamping! Generally,
we can glue up and clamp a table in 30-45 minutes. Theynwe let it set for a few
hours, remove oozing glue, and "reclamp" spots we missed. Then we let it set
for a few hours more. Since we own a LOT of clamps, we can do more than one at a
time, but the record for complete 30 x 60 tables in one days is about 8. A more
typical number, on a work day, is 1 or 2. So you can see that 84 could take a
month. Or more. Net time around, I propose for SCLTC that we mill all the parts
and set them aside. Then assemble a table or two from time to time.
