Those "weather" balloon sightings probably are classified. My father
worked for the DOD as a space physicist and he flew several
instrumentation balloons. I don't know if they were classified or not,
but some of the work he did was classified. He once brought home a
magazine article on the Long Duration Exposure Facility, and said he
couldn't talk about what he was working on, but we might find this
article interesting. He eventually had two experiments on the LDEF, and
eventually I even got to see some of the stuff. I believe that the
military and the intelligence organizations also fly baloons for various
intelligence reasons (and who knows, my father's balloon packages may
have even had a camera or two or some other spy gear attached).
