Johann Sebastian Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor (on organ)
Sorry, prefer an orchestral version :-) I don't think I've heard more than
one organ version which wasn't "muddy" in places.

Ah, but how can you get that "horror" movie effect without an organ? I
must say that in general, I don't find too many organ pieces to be
"muddy". It definitely depends on the quality of the recording and the
quality of the stereo (though my home stereo isn't too much to write
home about). One thing I find interesting is that in my car, organ music
is the only music which I can consistently crank up the base and crank
it all the way up without it becoming distorted (though I don't listen
to that much orchestral music - my guess is it would do ok also, I think
the problem with a lot of modern music is that the quality of the drum
machines isn't very good, so many of my modern CDs go boom-scratch
boom-scratch boom-scratch, whereas the organ CDs will have a sustained
full blast base sound which gets the whole car vibrating without lots of
distortion in the sound system).

The skill of the organ player is also important, after all, a large
organ is practically a symphony by itself.
