Another thought is to use some external source to hold the beam still for the first
10 to 20 seconds of the contest, allowing both robots to do their stuff, and then
let the beam go.
That should have the effect of slowing down the super-fast, super-well built robots,
giving the not-so-expert builders a least a slight chance.
The beam could be held in place by a 2x4 under each side. Then, the starting weight
is not as much of an issue. But there really should be a limit. Somewhere around 4
lbs is plenty.
