(...) I think that's two. (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) Unrelated: Ties. Derek brought this up. Do we need to think about ties? Calum (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) I was just planning on wearing a T-shirt. I didn't realize there would be a dress code. (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

it was my understanding that ~IF~ after a long day of watching 1000 games of Connect 4, that if at the end of the day 2 robots, really do tie... then they tie. period.   Re: ply vs turn

(...) Here are the problems I see with ties: 1. I think we are going to see a lot of ties. 2. If two robots tie, they are very likely to tie exactly the same way if they play again. Derek (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) here are the problems I KNOW! no one has proposed a way to fairly, accurately, and consistently score this game KEEPING IN MIND that we don't know if we will have 5 robots, or 18 robots show up. AS WELL we know that with "good" software this (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) So, during the qualification round, we're running robots against each other. How do you score them if they tie? Derek is suggesting we give it to whoever executes their total move time fastest. Calum (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) we've gone over this.... we weight the "score" to the second player. if i go second and win...(or tie) then i am a "better" player. if you go first AND Do NOT WIN..... then your software is not "perfect" Chris There's no 'I' in 'team'. There's (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) Agree. In the final and semifinals, we should play with both getting a chance to move first... but with the first rounds, the winners should be pretty clear. I still doubt we're going to see the 'perfect solution'. Steve? Regarding the timing, (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) Actually, after playing MANY games of Connect-four, I'm starting to think ties will not be a problem. I think the game is complex enough that no two people will take exactly the same approach, and one will turn out better than another. If two (...)   Re: ply vs turn

(...) I agree. (...) I expect most people will need more space, which is why I suggested changing it, but it's been stated that the posted rules should not be changed at this late date. Luckily, I had two weeks off, over the holidays, so I was able (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) This issue has frustrated me too. I was there for the original discussion about what the common area should be. When we original discussed it we included extra space to either side of the board. However Someone didn't draw it that way, so we (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) what? You're breaking up. (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) no, not really. as it stands we are still at the 3 minute mark. (per move) and 40 per (entire) game.... BUT it looks like people really wont use all that. steve, at a 'deep' ply, how long do you need? if you say that you ply to the max min (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) You can blame Bruce Sheridan. He was the one who supplied the original basis for the graphic during a summary of the game rules. That said, I think informally we're all going to be aware of and try not to obstruct people that extend over. So (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) > (...) There appears to be a consensus that the clearance is a problem. So why keep it informal. Increase the common space by 6 studs to either side of the board and the issue goes a way. And it brings us back to what we original decided. The (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) Ok, you're going to have to explain this to me. I can accept that I'm a dink. Mainly, because I play within the rules. Whenever I do anything unusual, I'm a dink. That's fine. If I build a robot that lives right by the common area, I'm a dink. (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) The rules were set out early without any spacing on the side. For whatever reason (Bruce, me, otherwise), that is the ruleset that was posted. You had several weeks to complain, and no one did until not too long ago. Since then, people may be (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) No objection here. (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) This is why I have a problem with this. This is such an easily defined rule that it shouldn't be possible to be called a dink for compiling with it. Several people have said they need space at the side of the board. We originally discussed (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) Let me explain why some may call you a dink. I've somehow gained the impression that you tend to look for loopholes and exploit them, which is contrary to the general outlook of this organization. People try to keep things informal, yet that (...) (21 years ago, 5-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

Two weeks ago (before the big holiday break) I asked about increasing the spacing, thinking people may be spending some holiday time building for rtl15, and I wanted to suggest (...)   Re: ply vs turn

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) Me too, although I assumed it was sort of unnecessary to flail it, since everyone knew what my bot took up in terms of space way back in November. The guts have changed dramatically since then, of course, but the external form-factor is almost (...) (21 years ago, 6-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: ply vs turn

(...) It's funny this keeps coming up. Was there a pipe racer that ran in competition that didn't have a battery box attached? no. I didn't have it attached when I was testing it, and you guys said I couldn't do that. So, I didn't hesitate to mount (...) (21 years ago, 6-Jan-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
