If you already know VBA then I'd suggest you use Visual Basic. While it's not as powerful as something like Visual C++ it is remarkably good for building small utilities really quickly. Actually you already quite guessed the problem. It is overheating CPU or MB alarm. P2B motherboards have visual (flashing power led) and audio alarms for that (beeps that you heard). I just tried a Mozilla nightly (not K-meleon, which doesn't currently work with Win95) on my PPro 180 system (the Linux numbers were from my PIII 450 at work) and it took 12 seconds to load.
