What's wrong with my PC?

I have an ASUS P2B based computer in an ATX box.  This is the kind
with auto-power off.

Recently there was a temporarily power cut in my aparatement.  The PC
was turned off at the time.  The first time I tried to start it up
afterwards, it was completely dead.  No sign of life whatsoever.  So I
tried to purchase a new power supply unit, thinking the old one was
probably faulty.

With the new PSU, the PC booted up just fine and normal, however after
a few minutes the screen started flickering, the "on"-light flashed
irregularly and there were some light clicking/nibbling sounds from
the computer.  The sounds were not from the PSU, probably from the
motherboard or perhaps the CPU fan.  This looked pretty bad, so I
quickly turned off the computer.

Trying to restart it again failed -- the "on"-light flashed and there
were the clicking sounds again and the CPU fan spun irregularly.
Trying to let it cool down for 15 minutes and then start it up again
succeded, but I didn't dare to have it going more than some seconds.

Thinking that it was probably some component which had failed or
shortcut, I tried to pull out every card, leaving only the CPU, RAM
and keyboard connected.  I also disconnected the hard drive and
floppy.  Still the same thing happened when I turned on the computer.

Do anybody have some similar experience?  What do you think may be
wrong with the PC?

Thanks for any help.

Fredrik

Actually you already quite guessed the problem. It is overheating CPU or MB alarm. P2B motherboards have visual (flashing power led) and audio alarms for that (beeps that you heard). Either your CPU fan is gone, or your temperature alarm limit is (...) (24 years ago, 4-Sep-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
