Nah, I'd bet it has more to do with simple Newtonian laws--
action vs. reaction. The same pistol with a shorter barrel
weighs surprisingly less (and the weight distribution is
different); ditto pistols vs. rifles. Given the same amount
of propellant in the cartridge, a lighter weapon will react
more sharply. Ditto with the rotation of handguns. (This
is one reason I sometimes chuckle about "ultralight polymer
handguns." Better be ready for a REALLY sharp recoil there,
fellas. It'll tear your dadgummed palm off.)
Bonus tip for the day: Don't stand behind a recoilless rifle.
