OK, I have given this a while to percolate. I admit I am ambivalent. There
are good (but not stunningly great) arguments advanced for, and against, the
idea of a ventilation group. I won't do the three reasons exercise as I
think all of mine have been posted already.
(I had 3 each in this spot but they were all repetitive so I trimmed them)
On balance I think I am against this idea. And it's because it's almost a
tossup. Most of the time I make pretty snap decisions either for or against
ideas. When I can't make up my mind I tend to vote for leaving things they
way they were or leaving them simpler. This is one of those times.
Simplicity is good. A reason against.
If we do have one I don't think it should be subbed to .debate. I would vote
for .vent or less preferably off-topic.vent. off-topic.debate.flame is not a
good name. A reason against it as construed, although not if the name were
changed.
The stuff suggested by others about making it invisible, preference
controlled, not crosspostable outwards, etc, etc, all are good ideas. But
they take work to implement and thus, detract from the real work still in
need of doing here. Another reason against.
Heck, I just gave three against. OK then. 3 (new?, probably not) for:
People vent. Channel it and you may (I dispute this, actually) cut down on
ventilation elsewhere
Flames can be fun to watch.
Flames can be instructive, you learn new ways of expressing invective.
Sorry... Those all suck. They are dumb reasons.

| IMO, Lugnet is a mirror of our inner child - a safe harbor for sharing the mutual appreciation of an imagination-enabling toy. With reagard to Lugnet.vent, Lugnet.darkside or whatever we may call it, I believe it is a recipe for disaster. Doesn't (...) (24 years ago, 29-Oct-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
