When a bunch of people are leaving some venue (and as I understand it, some
of the people leaving RTL were major contributors), one should look at what
is going on. The purpose of newsgroups, and Lugnet especially, are to create
a certain community where information can be shared. Anything which
contributes to a reduction in sharing of information (either because you can
no longer find pertinent information due to traffic loads and off topic
posts, or because people are leaving)should be unwelcome.
To this extent, Lugnet lays down certain ground rules:
- keep language clean, you don't need to use certain language to communicate
(for the most part, I agree, that in certain situations, one needs to convey
a high degree of upsetness, to this extent, I would excuse "foul language"
in lugnet.off-topic.debate, and when someone is defending themselves against
attack in other newsgroups [i.e. if someone was being constantly harassed,
who is trying to participate, I could see severe language getting used, if
this happens it should also be a signal to Todd to step in and defuse the
situation]).
- stay (mostly) on topic, especially do not post auctions in any group other
than lugnet.market.auction, or lugnet.market.theory (and only then to
illustrate a point, or invite discussion).
- use the "off-topic" groups to discuss non-LEGO related subjects
- don't post binaries or formatted text (HTML or otherwise) in groups which
do not welcome them
These ground rules create a fertile ground for discussion.

Terms like "bad taste" are extremely subjective, and to my mind have no real meaning although I understand the gist of what you are saying -- really its more of a simple put down than anything else.
