Re: GODMONEY (was re: Anthrax worse than AIDS?)

(...) How's that? I'd call Koresh a Christian, just not a mainstream one. What does it take to be a 'true' Christian? Chris (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: GODMONEY (was re: Anthrax worse than AIDS?)

I think Dave! did a pretty good job of expanding on what I was intimating in my little Godmoney venting. I do think our priorities are completing screwed. I think we should BY FAR be more concerned with security, emergency response, and how to (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: GODMONEY (was re: Anthrax worse than AIDS?)

(...) All right, I retract that statement (which was admittedly unfair). I'm still not comfortable with "risky behavior," though, because it carries a vibe of "got what was coming to them," whether you intend it or not. (...) Agreed--just as David (...)   Re: Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

(...) What would it mean for Israel to play the good boy? Surely, they can't placate the demands of *all* neighboring states. Israel exists (though the how and why of it be may be questionable.) It's destruction is not an option; peace is only going (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Gotta love Oracle...

(...) What must a person of Turkish descent whose family has lived in Germany for three generations do to seek citizenship? (...) Actually, this is a tricky situation because ultimately I think that rights are just a notion. But I spend the majority (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

(...) The longer Israel plays the bad guy, the longer the people who "govern" places like Saudi-Arabia and Syria will have a distraction for their own people. I expect that if Israel were to all-of-a-sudden become a good boy, a few of the neighbours (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

(...) Granted, it would probably be in Israel's best interests to participate on the "world stage" but that doesn't mean that Middle Eastern countries have a free pass to throw around absolutely hateful rhetoric in the meantime. A congress on racism (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: 14 posts by Scott just now

(...) Exactly! No one needs a banning, you both just need a perspective. Scott, it doesn't hurt your standing here when Larry calls you a liar. It hurts you when you ask him to prove it umpteenmillion times. Larry, it doesn't hurt your standing here (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

(...) I have partly fallen in to the trap laid by Wasserstein. One can be: A Jew but not a Zionist. A Zionist but not a Jew. A Zionist Israeli but not an Jew etc etc The problem is people on both side choose to confuse the terms. Israeli are very (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: GODMONEY (was re: Anthrax worse than AIDS?)

(...) As currently deployed, it is indeed small potatoes. I'm sure more people are killed by food poisoning than anthrax. As a terrorist weapon it is very effective. I expect the economic cost of its impact must be huge. If the government treats it (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

(...) I'm not happy with the bedfellow relationship that my government has with Israel, so, no, I'm not suprised by the associations made between the U.S. and Israel. However...absolutely hateful and unplacatable anti-Israel and anti- Semitic (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

(...) I may be wrong, but I think the USA poured cold water on the meeting well before it even started as is was going to give its friends in the Middle East a hard time. So if the USA did not play ball because of the way Israel was being treated, (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: "unconstitutional detention" (Re: So now it's official...)

Re: GODMONEY (was re: Anthrax worse than AIDS?)

(...) I understand that the root of his issue was not bible purchases per se, but his GodMoney comments were red herrings meant to attack willy-nilly and make broad- brush generalizations about people of faith and their motives and concerns. (...) I (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: GODMONEY (was re: Anthrax worse than AIDS?)

(...) I read from Richard's post a concern that a disease that has claimed millions of lives is still perceived as a "fringe" disease, while a disease that recently has claimed fewer than 10 lives has been the front page story in every news source (...)   Re: GODMONEY (was re: Anthrax worse than AIDS?)

(...) I'm not sure what you are getting at. Can you please elaborate? Who is this "nobody" that you are referring to? What connection are you assuming between Bible-purchases and AIDS deaths? If I purchase a Bible (which I have in the last year), am (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

I'm sure that Wasserstein is aware that some of the "hatred" may well be entirely rational - does anyone seriously deny that? I know that for some time (prior to the events of Sept 11) Bush Jr almost appeared to be nurturing Amera-scepticism (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

"unconstitutional detention" (Re: So now it's official...)

(...) Indeed, I read about the case of Dr Mazen Al-Najjar who was held for over 3 years ( May 1997 - December 2000) without charge based on "secret evidence". He had lived in the USA since 1981. His lawyer said this when he was released (from BBC): (...) (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) and (...) does (...) That's a big change IMO. And indefinitely "under some circumstances". But that was only an example - the bill contains many other changes as well. ROSCO (23 years ago, 26-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

  Re: So now it's official...

(...) This is only new in that it can be used to detain people who have otherwise legitimate papers. If you're found to be somehow suspect or in violation of your visa, you already *can* and often *are* detained without trial indefinitely, in (...)   So now it's official...

GODMONEY (was re: Anthrax worse than AIDS?)

Horst: Absolutely right. What matters over here is GOD and MONEY, or GODMONEY. Nobody cares if thousands of homosexuals suffer and die. Bible sales are up.   DCI tribute to September 11th.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but i didn't know where else it really fit. I was at DCI (Drums Corps International) 2001 Summer Music Games finals on August 11th. DCI has now posted a .mov file of the traditional finale - a medley (...) (23 years ago, 25-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Can't Drive 65 (was 'Re: Tolerance of vice')

  Anti-Semitism and Anti-Americanism

I just came across this article, and thought that it would make good debate fodder. (It's sure to raise some hackles from some quarters.) It is by Bernard Wasserstein, Professor of History at the University of Glasgow, and President of the Jewish (...) (23 years ago, 25-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Novels are now airline security risk...

I mean, I can understand the book Hayduke Lives! as something that might turn an eye, but HARRY POTTER?!?! My god. What is the threat, (...) (23 years ago, 25-Oct-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
