But that's always been my impression of transforming toys--you have a
robot that looks like a car transforming into a car that looks like a robot.
TYCO had a line of this sort some years back, and they're okay, but not
great. MegaBloks currently offers Blok-Bots, which are clever, with some
cool designs. Some people have made MOC's of transforming vehicles/robots,
and quite good ones at that--better by a long shot than anything LEGO or the
clones have produced.
As a side note, I'd have to say I prefer the transforming robots that can
complete change from one shape to the other without physically removing any
parts from either model--the hands and/or wheels fold away or are otherwise
employed in each shape. If LEGO should ever make a transforming robot line,
I hope they'd make them in this way. It doesn't seem like much of a
Transformer if you have to attach the ready-built head when switching from
car to robot modes...
