Having also been "in an armed conflict on foreign soil" (in fact, I was in
the middle of Iraq with the 1st Cav while the Marines were still sailing
back and forth in the Arabian Gulf playing decoy, but I digress), I can say
that the Gulf War and internet spam actually do have one thing in common.

During the war I worked satellite communications, which was in very high
demand, because it is reliable, fast, and can transmit over long distances
regardless of terrain.  The amount of satellite rigs in theater quickly
saturated the available satellite bandwidth.  Thus, satellite time was
*very* closely monitored, and many units were denied access or had their
bandwidth reduced because their priority was not high enough.

Now unsolicited e-mail also uses a large portion of a limited resource,
i.e., internet bandwidth.  If you have ever been unable to view a web page
because of time-outs, then chances are you are the victim of spam, whether
or not it was sent to you.  How would you like it if your creditors started
charging you late fees because your mailbox was so full of junk mail that
the postal carrier was unable to deliver your bills?

Hey all,

I've just been spammed by one Paul Koelewijn, concerning his Lego • auctions.
Although he claims that it isn't a spam message, it is an unsolicited
commercial e-mail.  Ergo, spam.

Has anyone else received this as well?

Cheers,

It always makes me shake my head at how uptight some internet users are. • What's
the big deal - I mean, how hard is it to press the delete button. Some • people
are dying of cancer and don't complain as much. If the guy sent you a • notice of
a great deal on a set that you want you'd be posting a FOTW instead. • People
need to lighten up, spam is not so incredibly unbearable - sometimes it's • great
info. My two cents, having been in the Marines in an armed conflict on • foreign
soil and all.

Semper Fi,
Bill
