I actually have not yet been to a fest, so perhaps my input means less here, but I’m all for having multiple fests each year. To me it comes down to a simple question - do we have the same group of people, now diluted over multiple fests (and websites, as with Felix’s post), and, with limitations on time and money, not everyone can attend every fest? Or is the community growing, and multiple fests (and websites) encourage the participation of people who can’t for one reason or another attend the one big event? I tend to believe it is the latter for fests - I certainly believe it is the latter for websites.

While this nostalgic communal oneness is a nice concept, I think it is ultimately a recipe for stagnation. If you only have four friends, you can do everything together, because everyone can pile into the same car and go out and have fun. If you have ten friends, now you can’t do that - this one has a commitment, maybe those two don’t get along so well, maybe these three would rather do something else. If you have 100 friends, you’ll never get them in the same place at once except for your wedding and your funeral. It’s pretty much the same with a growing community. Or to use another analogy, in grad school I attended a student-oriented church. It was just small enough (~60-80) that everyone knew each other quite well, but large enough that it became impossible to plan things, because someone was always saying “Oh, we can’t hold the potluck dinner on Saturday, because has to work that day” or whatever. At some point you have to acknowledge that not everyone can do everything and make your plans, or else you can stagnate and stay small enough so that everyone can do everything.

(...) Why haven't you attended a fest? Seriously. Is it time? Location? Money? While more events doesn't help with the money, (except for cutting down travel-expenses), it can help with the correct time, or better location. As you said, these may (...) (18 years ago, 11-Dec-06, to lugnet.events)

Once upon a time, there were no fests, And that was bad. Then there was The One Fest. And that was good. Then there were more. And some were good, and some not so good. And now there are many. And some are great. And some are brand new and have (...) (18 years ago, 10-Dec-06, to lugnet.events, FTX) !!
