If theres any truth to this ('eight year license'), then it leaves the
doors wide open for the other guys (MBs, et al). Heck, it even leaves
the doors open for creative AFOLs. All we need are parts, designs &
distribution :)

Seriously, the SWs line had better be very very good to lock up part of
TLCs world for that many years.

Ray

Just think - if they're locking it into Star Wars for 8 years, they've gotta
keep producing sets for that long. Just think of all the parts they'll have to
release to keep making those sets. They've already created slightly more • usable
alien disc parts (MF). What if they release a Sandcrawler? Of course it'll be
squished like all the rest of the SW sets, but they've got to get the tank
tread someplace. I've not seen that kind of tread for a long time (last I saw
was in set 856 - I've got one but I want MORE! :) We've already got a plethora
of notched engine tubes, lots of funky grey and dark grey pieces, plenty of
orange... ooh the thought of 8 more years just turns my crank I gotta say -
just for the parts sources! :)

8 more years!
8 more years!
8 more ye--

No tomato here!
I have to agree, the old space theme was beautiful, coming out of the 1980s
into the last "true" theme-Exploriens.
Starships and bases revolved around a similar design
that I think needed a change.
I like the fresh ideas being injected by the Star Wars line, the parts alone
have been some of LEGO's most innovative.  After 8(ish) years they will have a
plethora of molds for parts to choose from.
Even more, the Sci-Fi influence of creative parts has gone wild in the non-
space sub-themes.  Let me ask you, take the lower half of the cockpit section
from the Tunnel Trasport (RR) and add a solid trans-purple window with roll-
cage and would that not be the best ship cockpit yet?  Wider is better.  Space
is not dead, it is just gathering strength (and parts).
Long Live the Spacers!!!!
Aaron

(...) You consider Exploriens to be the last "true" space theme? Why is that? Is it because the UFO and Insectoid sets come with different looking (alien) helmets? Or something else about the elements included in the later sets? Followups set to (...) (25 years ago, 27-Nov-99, to lugnet.dear-lego, lugnet.general)
