Having such piece-based local maps would also help speed up
re-rendering the current step's image when a part is modified. :)
Especially if we have that optimized 3D hit-testing logic.  Because
we'd only want to rebuild the invalidated section of the image.

Plus, the piece-maps could be reused for identical parts with
identical orientations.  Color can be different between the pieces
sharing map-information, probably.
