This is true to a degree, but constructive criticism is a part of it to some
extent.
I had been building mecha for about 8 months when someone told me that my
proportions were wrong. I would never have noticed it by myself, or if I did
it would have been a long ways down the road, because it took me some time
to look at my mecha and say, dang, you're right! After that I made a
concious effort to keep my proportions somewhat correct.
So consructive criticism is useful I think, spending more time building is
the main skill developer, but critiscim can either teach you new things that
you never would have seen, or teach you new things that would be a few
months down the road still otherwise.
