So alot has been going on I see. Great! I was up all night a few nights ago
packing my Mecha for BW03 and it wiped me out. I think I have been sleeping
for two days now. I feel alot better and I have been giving some thought to
this thread as I have my coffe.

So, First of all, I applaud all of you for adding to this thread and I
certainly want Mark and Mark to know that we have taken their suggestion,
nay criticism to heart and its a darn good point.

Come Back GAMH! But your Mecha mocs need a little work too! LOL!

I have a few thoughts:

I love getting feedback, but I think alot of you either don't say, realize
or comment on all the individual subsystems that comprise my Mecha.

I enjoy hearing from each of you, but I want more questions and impressions
on the components. I actually look foward to opening up design questions and
thus moving towards some quality discussions. But I don't get that, or
rarely do.

About commenting, I am a little guilty of consistanly giving praise while
offering little in the way of "come on you can do better" or "um...this part
kinda sucks on the mech"

Rather I choose to emphysize what I do like about the creation.
Reason is, that I'm never sure about the creator's age, experience and
resources.
Plus people have differing levels of ablility.

Plus without trying to sound like a big head, but the stuff I make is well,
leaps and bounds ahead of those that I see around. That is simply because I
have been building Lego Mecha for over 16 years and I'm a total Mecha Geek.
So I tend to be more encouraging with my remarks rather than offering
critiques. I suppose in the end it really doesn't help the builder.

Also, I feel that when I do give encouragement, a sort of reverse phycology
takes place.
Meaning that the builder will feel good about what they have done and that
the next time around they will feel good about building more, thusly
increasing their confidence. I aim at the result of bringing the builder
back with more MOCs. And over time a builders knolwedge grows and so does
the technique. This "over time effect" improves the builders skills.

I think that positive encouragement will in itself achieve the same effect
as pointing out the inconsistancies. But then again not really. I suppose
someone has got to speak up and point out some things that a builder could
have done or what might make the creation more pallettable. I'm just never
sure on how far a given builder is willing to go. Or how much Lego him or
her has, or what their level of expertise is. I figure If I say "hey that's
great", they come back with more. It's all about encoragement in my book.
However the point that a builder may never try harder or be pushed to do
better is an awesome point and I agree we should give it a try.

We just need to be sure everyone will take it on the shoulder and know that
it is just aimed at producing better results.
Building is like evolution. Trial and error. Deep pockets aren't always
necc. to making out of sight MOCs.
It's the art of using the parts to achieve good results.

One thing I want to avoid is the "what if syndrome".
Many times (all the Time) I build a Mech and for many reasons, I may opt to
leave a feature out because the scale can't support the feature or I just
don't have the parts to go around, like having 3 or 5 of something when I
need 4 or 6 of a given part.

I'm not big on figuring what I need then waiting to get it. It kills me when
I can't find something in my collection, then I just try to make use of
something else. Then again, if your going to do something do it right and
fork over some bucks goto TRU or place a Bricklink order if it means the MOC
will be all the better. I just have too much Lego to be ordering more and I
have GOT to make an effort to use what I already own.

But, let's give it a try. Let's push eachother. I think its a grand idea.
Snow daddy, please tell GAMH that we took his suggestions to heart and we're
gonna give it a whirl. Besides we want him back! He's one of the Orignial
Mecha Builders!

I have always said building anything is a series of compromises. If I start
out with 10 ideas that I want to include into a given construction, if I get
half of them into the creation I know I did ok. There are many design
difficulties that go along with scale and parts availability as well as
knowledge that limit creations. It's easy to sit in the stands and say "Oh
what about this or that" when the acutual building has lead to the outcome
we see in the end.

Still, the kind of feedback we should strive for should include a dose of
"What if's" and "try this or thats".

Again, let's be careful about how we do it and how we take it. Let's
encourage and not slam. Push not pull.

I have like so many others, tons of hidden secrets inside and out in the
Mecha I make. Funny thing is, this is the place to share them, but they go
unnoticed or not understood. I'll try to point these sub-systems out and try
to open up the discussion a bit.

Another thing is, alot of the time, we make something, there are always or
ussually points or places on the creation that we as the builder are not
happy with: Like, "oh this part was tough and I didn't really like the way
it came out" etc...
If we are honest enough to point out the flaws in our own work we could set
the pace for opening up dialog on how we could do better by getting input
from other builders.

Remember, building is a personal experience, we make choices that suit us
and we do it for ourselves. That's one of the things I love about Lego and
building in general, is that I am in charge, I am the one who decides, its
up to me.

Cool, so I'll try to help out in making more quality observations. For me I
got to try to remain humble. I don't expect everyone to goto the legnths I
goto in making Mecha. So I try to be careful in what I say becuase I never
know a persons age, experience and what they are willing to get into.

Still let's encourage eachother and attmept to point out how a given
creation could be poilished up if Necc.
I still want to say I have never been fake about my feedback, sometimes I
just rather follow the old creedo that our Mom's taught us:

If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all. But
this will just leave uncertaity and not push anyone to do better. So yes,
let's get a little more depth to our feedback.

Sincerly,

e

It is difficult to say whether criticism in this realm is constructive. This issue gets to the core of the building process.
