Hey, all,

I've been away from Lugnet for a little while; I log on today, and find a
Whirlwind of discussion about various topics.  I would really like to address a
few:

1) Criticism: I agree with Mark and Tony.  I really haven't been participating
much here because the pattern does seem to be "nice work, I like it a lot, blah
blah blah..."  If I don't have anything positive to say, I don't really want to
reply to a post.  I realize that's not very constructive, and I apologize.

I was in L.A. last August, where I met up with Sun Yun, Bryce and Dave Johann.
Sun gave me the most useful constructive criticism regarding my Andromeda
mecha; it really got me rethinking the way I build mecha.  I'm sure all of us
can benefit from such criticism.  There's no insult when we know the criticism
is coming from friends who share our passion for mecha.

2) LMHoF: Eric kind of through out that he was a founder of the LMHoF, and
didn't say much more about it.  So I thought I would throw my two cents in
here.  I am also a "founder".  It started with several mecha builders emailing
each other back and forth with questions about how to build, support weight for
massive creations, etc.  One member had been working on a powerpoint
presentation about various mecha types.  we thought it would be cool to make a
website that had an index of mecha from different people, complete with links
to their websites; this way, a new mecha builder wouldn't have to hunt around
too hard for a sampling of what's out there.  Someone came up with the name
"Mecha Hall of Fame" and so it became the LMHoF.

As one of the creators, I would like to make a few points which are my own
opinion, and not those of all who participate.  First off, when we first
started the LMHoF, pictures were posted on the website before we asked
permission for their use.  I would VERY MUCH like to apologize for that.  That
was a mix up that unitentionally occurred amidst all of the confusion of trying
to get LMHoF up and running.  I've been waiting two years to get that off my
chest.

As there are seven people who help make LMHoF run, we all have different takes
on what it is supposed to be.  I was always of the opinion that LMHoF was a
resource for builders.  When I started building mecha, I had to search all over
the internet to find examples of Lego mecha.  Then Lugnet came along and "Cool
Lego Site of the Week" which helped a lot, but the sidebar wasn't frequently
maintained; so when new sites came out, one had to sift through Lugnet posts to
find the links.  LMHoF was something to be used, IMO.  Others took the name
"Hall of Fame" more literally.  The point is that those who participate get
different things out of the existence of LMHoF, and I hope others do, as well.

Eric has, as far as I can tell, been the driving force behind LMHoF for about a
year now.  We all check in and vote occasionally, but the general operation and
appearance of the site has been hanlded by him.  While he and I share different
views about the purpose meaning of the site, be both think that in the end,
more people benefit from its existence than not.  I hope many of you agree.

3) Dave: Dave, my heart goes out to you, And I hope everything works out in the
long run.  I'm not sure whether or not I'll make it to BricksWest, but if so, I
hope to see you there.  Don't let this build.mecha curator stuff get you down.
when you're ready and feel up to it, we'll figure this curator stuff out.

Later,

Chris

(...) One thing I'd like to point out is that I'm one of the most fortunate mecha builders that post here. Why? Because of Chris' previous paragraph. Let me go off on a tangent for a minute to explain. Building mecha isn't an easy thing to do-we do (...) (21 years ago, 10-Feb-03, to lugnet.build.mecha)
