I managed to make a tight enough interconnection between four turntables and
two throwbot gearboxes to make a new hip joint with full gear control of all
movement. I actually wasn't intending to build a gundam and was just fooling
around to see if I could make a joint like this, then found that to really
determine how it would perform I'd have to build the whole mecha.
The front and back movement is controlled by worm gears at the top edge of
the vertical turntables. The sidewards motion is controlled by the knobs on
top of the throwbot gear boxes. The leg splay is controlled by knobs on the
side of the horizontal turntables (which drive twin counter rotating worm
screws turning a small gear which turns a medium gear on the same shaft
embedded in the center of the turntable.) Above all this complicated hip
action is another turntable for waist twist, which connects to another
throwbot gearbox for waist bending... This model has a lot of new
technology, including new arm joints, a quick release ankle system... well,
everything is new and improved, come to think of it.
The model is mostly complete except for the back thruster pack. I'll post
full pictures when it's finished.
