Yep, "nov line" is definitively news overview line".

It normally happens while downloading the unread messages in some
large group. I've tried to manually telnet to the NNTP server to
retrieve the nov lines, but I found nothing suspicious looking there.
So it's all very vauge, I'm afraid. I should come back when (if) I
have something more to report.
It also normally happens during the "rush hours" (as seen from me) at
approx 17.00-20.00 GMT when the LUGNET server is pretty loaded.
