I haven't seen that, but I wonder if what Emacs means by "nov line" is "news
overview line"? (That would make sense too, if it croaks while fetching new
articles.)
Does it tell you which group it's downloading while it's doing that? If I
knew what group or groups gave you trouble, I might be able to discover
something "odd-looking" in the overview file for that group. Obviously, if
it you aren't able to tell precisely which article it died on, however, then
a smaller group (i.e., one with fewer messages) would be more helpful to
inspect from the inside than a larger group.
