Its been a long time since I looked at the firmware in detail, but is it possible that the bytecode interpreter is driven from one of the timer chains?   IR Tower Problem Solved
 
When I had the light sensor pointed at the IR tower, it apparently drowned out the RCX, and I couldn't download an NQC program. Covering it during the download solved the problem. I did the same for a proximity sensor for the same reason. Dave Paule (25 years ago, 5-Jan-00, to lugnet.robotics)

The key part MAY BE the Lego to DCP connection, but I don't think that the connection itself is anything more than a Lego wire connector soldered to a DIN plug.
