   Hi train fans,

the possible(?) end of 9V trains, the blay desaster and the too high demands of myself against my MOCs have lead to a kind of frustration in my hobby. Due to all this and more, I lost a lot of the fun that LEGO meant to me in the past, but nevertheless here comes a new MOC of mine.

Ben -

It’s nice to see another lovely engine from you again. This seems to be one of your most detailed yet. And it’s something of a relief to see some steam trains on lugnet.

I like the boiler design - I like how you don’t compromise if there’s a specific look you want, however much extra work it takes. The same with using all rimmed wheels - the use of the rounded bevel gears to synchronise the jointed wheel blocks instead of using a longitudinal driveshaft is very clever.

I also notice you’ve kept the width down on this engine (particularly the cylinders), such that it could (almost) scrape through an 8-wide gap. It makes for a much more sleek-looking model.

And I love the foggy renders. They’re great.

Thanks for your feedback Jason!

I think your engines (and your other creations as displayed during the past days as top entry on the left hand side of this group) don’t have to hide, but belong to the most accurate and complex models I have ever seen.

I still remember your Zwolle 2005 layout and especially the one diesel train, which opened the air inlet grills under heavy duty. I still think this might have been the most surprising technique since some of the tilting trains were invented in LEGO (Eric Brok and James Mathis did early designs if I remember right).

Another three renderings have just been finished and uploaded at brickshelf. Now a little bit photoshopped.

BTW: The engine is kept in same scale as all the other 7-wides I did before. Only the wind leading shields are now slightly wider, but this follows the prototype more or less. The cylinderblock is done 9-wide (as with the other BBB-wheel engine - BR23). But I used this width even for the engines without moving pistons. Those cylinder blocks are in in real life by far wider than the boiler and cabin.

The 7-wide style is of course underscaled in relation to gauge and minifig size, but the 7-wides offer advantages in curves and in weight (so they promise better running behaviour). In fact I have now done several test runs with the LEGO built BR39 and the engine works fine on ovals and curves, but the intersection gearwheel may be not sufficient for points. After some rounds the pistons get out of synchronous drive and derailments happen now and then. Possibly I have just to move the two pivot points nearer to the center.

Leg Godt!

P.s.: ALL German steam engines 1920...1970 have been black and red. Only in war times some had camuflage colours. So I will probably stay at this colours.

Just engines before WW1 offer some colours like green and blue. And some prototypes and private owned where coloured differently as well. I could of course try some engines of the European neighbours one day.... There are some really nice engine designs in Czechia.

(...) I know - I'm lucky that British engines came in a huge variety of colours, thanks to all the different railway companies over the years - for example, some trains are even black at the bottom and red on top! Can you imagine? ;-) I find it (...) (18 years ago, 1-Dec-06, to lugnet.trains, FTX)
