I have two questions, though:  First, why did you go for the seperated
sections of drivers?  Did you not have any blind drivers, or did you not want
the locomotive to swing so much over the tracks during turns?  Or is there
some other reason?  I'm not criticising, I'm just curious.

Second, what combination of parts did you use for the smokestack? (or
whatever it's called, I'm terrible with vocabulary).  I love the look of it,
and I'd like to see if I couldn't put it on my Polar Express (currently the
smokestack is a 2x2 round brick), but for the life of me I can't figure it
out.  I can see it's two tires, but I can't tell if there are hubs involved,
or what holds the stack of tires to the locomotive.

Anyway... great job!

Dear Anthony,

thanks to you (and all others) for the overwhelming positive feedback! I myself
still think the model needs a few more details and structures like a black
minifig hand here and there or some space tools....

The smokestack (I have no idea about English train idioms either) is built from
a 2x2 turntable base (with a 14 LEGO units inner diameter) and two wheels from
set 8655 (that is first the train roof parts pack - now we have 8666 which is
twice as good!). In the center on half height there is the black hub from 8655
(chrom to bottom).

Those are connected with one out of three LEGO parts, which I dare to modify
with a scalpell. I am talking about the "Flex tubes". (The other two elements
are pneumatic tubes and the "bad" superfriction wheelsets).

Concerning blind drivers, I do not mind them on most US-Locos I have seen here
and on LEGO-shows. All of them seem to have black wheels. First time I wanted to
use blinds on red wheel engines, I found them utterly odd looking.

Maybe it is just me, but when I look at a (red) train wheel, I am fixed on the
outer diameter (the flange outer rim). I do not look at the running diameter.

So if I use a combination of wheel+blind+wheel+blind I do not see drivers, but I
see BIG-wheel + smaller-wheel + BIG-wheel + smaller-wheel instead.
And that is the reason why I try to avoid blinds for my engines (with red
wheels). It is just my feeling of aesthetics.

LEG GODT!

Ben

(...) Ben, I just recreated your smokestack design and it is fantastic! It's absolutely perfect, and looks so great on my locomotive! Thank you so much! --Anthony (18 years ago, 3-Dec-06, to lugnet.trains)

(...) Fantastic engine, Ben! I've been wanting to do one of these German (European?) style steam locomotovies for a while, but I've been putting it off for more American style designs I'm familiar with. The amount of detail you've put in is just (...) (18 years ago, 29-Nov-06, to lugnet.trains, FTX)
