Hi guys & gals! I want to say first, "long time reader, first time poster."
In brief, the Star Wars line reawkened my Lego craze from its dormant stage,
although I haven't been active in building (I did build an E-Wing and an
8-middle-section Pirate ship -- both on my Brickshelf account), I have been
following the community on Brickshelf, Lugnet, and FBTB for quite some time now.

Recently, I was struck by inspiration. Well, not inspiration so much as a
table -- I bumped into one of those folding leg tables at Office Depot. I
thought, "wow, when I move, I could build something big on one of these."
Why when I move? Well, at the moment I'm in a VERY small studio apartment
north of Baltimore -- in June, I move to a two-bedroom (so I can actually,
you know, walk around without tripping over stuff).

So anyways, I thought about the table, and my desire to build something big
out of Lego. And so these thoughts festered through my brain as I endured
the beginning of the spring semester, and countless snow days ... and then
something happened. Star Trek IV SE came out on DVD. And I bought it, and
I watched it, and inspiration just sort of struck me ... that is to say, a
Lego Starship flew out of the wall and cracked me in the head (well, no).

But I was, and am, inspired! A Lego "Star Trek" starship, in mini-fig
scale. My goal is to build as accurate a representation of a TOS Movie Era
starship (of an original design) as I can. So I started brainstorming --
okay, what do I need? Well, the obvious ones came to mind: I need a Main
Bridge, Main Engineering, Transporter Rooms, Sickbay ... I need crew &
officer's quarters, I need science labs, I need a turbolift system! The not
so obvious: I need a computer core, life-sciences monitoring, water tanks,
shuttlebay, cargobay, cargo transporter, morgue, brig ...

I sat down last week, over spring break, and began drawing up layouts on
graph paper. Nothing fancy ... figured out a shape for the hull, and how
many pegs a table 30" by 60" could accomodate, and I began to draw. And
thusly things began to shape up, and several floorplans later, I've got the
rough draft of the ship's layout. It's nothing fancy, but I am hoping to
escape the "box" curse of Lego spacecraft. The secondary hull extends from
the rear of the saucer ... imagine the "Miranda-Class", if you took that
rear-porch and stretched it out, tapering it a bit. Sort of like that (but,
I'm sure, uglier). Above the bridge is a torpedo module (again, similar to
that on the "Miranda", with a different mounting system). The ship has a
total of six decks (including the torpedo launcher).

Well, here is a brief written layout of the ship, as seen in the final
rough-draft.

Deck One:

Torpedo Launcher. Includes one turbolift tube, torpedo storage, weapons
control, and torpedo launcher.

Deck Two:

The Main Bridge is located at the front of the deck (mid-saucer). A
compartment behind the main bridge is the weapons systems control. A
corridor leading out of the bridge leads to a turbolift tube, and behind
that, an airlock which allows access to the deck for hull repairs & maintenance.

Deck Three:

Here are dual turbolift tubes (side by side) - these tubes continue down
together to deck six (with a brief horizontal ability on deck four). The
saucer portion of the deck includes quarters for five senior officers, the
wardroom, captain's ready room, and the conference room. Sickbay,
Transporter Room 1, Shuttlebay control, and the Brig are located in the
secondary hull section.

Deck Four:

The largest deck of the ship. Crew Quarters (eight rooms accomodating 8 crew
or 8 mission specialists each), the galley, mess hall, two rec rooms, and
crew services are located in the foreward section. In the aft of the deck,
the upper warp core, shuttlebay, and Transporter Rooms 2 & 3 can be found.

Deck Five:

Main Engineering takes up most of the aft section of this deck. In addition,
Computer Core access, and the ship's science departments are found in the
saucer, as well as dual (direct mating) airlocks on port & starboard
sections of the hull.

Deck Six:

In the aft section, the lower warp core, plus the massive cargo bay (with
two space doors on port & starboard, as well as a dedicated cargo
transporter). In the forward section is access to deflector dish control,
and accomodations for twelve junior officers.

The ship's complement is 64 enlisted, and 17 commissioned officers.

Please let me know any ideas or questions you have, and I will do my best to
respond to them. Unfortunately, I do not have access to a scanner or I
would upload the deck layouts to my brickshelf account.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward not only to keeping you all
up-to-date on my progress, but also to becoming a part of the community here.

Wow, A huge Star Trek Lego ship that big in minifig scale would be really cool (and really challenging!). I look forward to following your progress and let us know as soon as you get some sketches up! Since we're on the subjects of Star Trek ships, (...) (21 years ago, 9-Apr-03, to lugnet.space)

(...) Well well. It is the glorious Malnurtured Snay. You do seem to pop up in all of my hang out spots, don't you Jeff? hehehe. This new project sounds pretty cool, but I have to see the end result of your last one. The hogwarts school, if I (...) (21 years ago, 30-Apr-03, to lugnet.space)
