Another nice thing about pneumatics is that you can put the heavy compressor
anywhere you want, and just run a couple of hoses off to the actual piston.
This is useful at the business end of a robot arm, for example, where you want
a powerful yet lightweight actuator.
I had another idea that I haven't had the time (or parts) to try out. I've
noticed that the rubber hoses can be gently pinched to cut off the air flow.
Has anyone tried using a set of cams to control "switching" of a network of air
hoses from one or more motors? The control axle would be turned to a
particular angle to open some hoses and close others before the master on/off
switch is opened to apply pressure and move the pistons. I can easily imagine
a variety of different pinch mechanisms built out of Lego.
There's no need to limit yourself to only using motors to control this, either.
Some pneumatic models could have mechanical levers to select different
functions manually instead of under RCX control.
Is anyone out there doing anything like this, or am I just full of hot air?

| FINALLY! some one has described a use for pneumatics! I keep debating on whetjer to buy some, because i don't know what to do w/them. My father is an engineer, but i remodel houses. I just like legos still as an adult. Thanks, & keep up the good (...) (25 years ago, 28-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)
