Expansion kit, as I'm thinking about it, is not $10-20 program only. It will
also include all parts needed for the robot. So complete kit would cost $25-30,
two times cheaper than current expansions. I may be wrong with all these prices,
but idea is to give someone everything to assemble the robot.
Public codebase still require use of computer to download the program. Parts are
also has to be bought from some place. It is why I do not think it would be so
popular. Like traditional sets - you may download building instructions but you
will have problems with part list. Without part lists available, custom programs
will be popular not more then currently custom instructions are popular compared
to standard LEGO sets.
Most people buy sets to open them and play with, nothing extra is required or
expected. I want to apply this conception to Mindstorms as well. All kits must
me smaller, cheaper ans simpler in use, only in this case they will be more
popular.
I very like your idea for several programs. To increase kit value without
increasing productions costs too much, programmed media may have a few programs.
New RCX must have some build-in switch to select between programs (program #1,
program #2 etc.), custom programs may use this switch in any another way, of
course. So single kit would include a bunch of robots which can be made from the
similar part list (it is the true LEGO spirit!). And instrutions, how to build a
robot for program #1 and so on.
