Don't get me wrong, as much as I seem like an ass at times, I'm a
fairly nice guy too.  I enjoy helping my friends and family.  There
are times, though, when it would be nice to have my knowledge be a
secret.  :)

That strikes me as a very typical statement for a lot of computer people.
I'm still trying to decide why.  Perhaps it's because computers break down
so often, compared to cars.  Perhaps people think they shouldn't have to pay
to get a computer fixed, since it's so small and therefore "simple."  I
don't know.

Computers don't break more often than cars.  Computer owners break
their computers more often than car owners break their cars.

If people did things like whipping into drive from reverse, poured
iced tea into their gas tank, drove with their eyes closed, and any
number of other silly things their cars would break as often as their
computers do.

I'm careful with my 1998 Saturn SL2 - however much it cost, like $13k
I guess.  I'm also careful with my computers, ranging in value from
about $300 to about $2000.  I'm nice to them, they're nice to me.  In
fact, I noticed my 300-450 is running a little hot during 3d gaming
play (about 100F) so I'm going to add a second fan tonight, then
tomorrow I'm going to drill some holes in the bottom front of the case
and add another.  If that doesn't bring the temp down to 90F or so
I'll invest in one of the Voodoo2 cooling fans I've seen.

But yeah, most computer geeks I know, after a while, don't try to hard
to let it be known that they know a lot.
