Thank you for pointing out the key fundamental ideological difference
between communist/socialists and capitalists. When a person starts a
business, what is their primary concern? To make money, any business hoping
to stay in business needs to remain profitable. Businesses, Nike included,
have no responsibility to ensure that their workers can afford anything in
life. “We want Nike to commit to a wage that would meet the basic needs of a
small family”. What? Think this through, Imagine that this happens and, Nike
has to double the wage it offers to those working in their “sweat shops”, to
counter those costs they will have to a) raise the cost of their products
and b) let go of some of those workers. How does that help people in these
countries? What will they do if they cannot work for the meager wages Nike
offers? If conditions are so horrible, why are these factories full of
workers? Could it be that the meager wage offered there is better than their
other options? Still concerned about the well being of these poor souls
living under repressive governments? Start a foundation and donate money,
why should it come from Nike
I too believe that business needs to be subject to law, and that
embezzlement, fraud, and collusion needs to be punished, and workers safety
needs to be ensured, but many of the labor laws do nothing but hurt the
economy. Minimum wage laws cause people to make more money, but they also
cause products to be more expensive, where is the gain? Unionization and
workers rights have ensured the export of jobs outside this country.
What supports my “fantastic” theories? Look at your computer, where was the
majority of the hardware and software developed? Look at your car, was that
designed or manufactured in a communist country? Think about every major
technological advancement in the past couple of centuries, how many of those
were developed by governments and how many were developed by people in a
free market trying to make money.

Take the oil fields from the hands of corrupt, anti-west dictators and
return it to private hands and we would no longer be hostage to their every
whim.
