The last 2-3 years being the operative phrase there.

Does the nuclear sub with sound element count as being within
"the last two to three years"?

That set, partially completed (the hull was about 4-5 rows of bricks high)
crumbled under its own weight when extended 1 foot off the edge of a table
without support. I consider that unacceptable adhesion.

Interesting test criteria.  I wonder how many of the large Lego sets I have
built over the years would have passed this test in partially completed states.
Come to think of it, there aren't many Lego sets this big, so if you extended
them a foot off the table, even complete, they'd just fall off ;-)  One could
speculate about how their superior adhesion would address impacting the floor
shortly thereafter.  <<GDR>>

I find I am regularly pleasantly surprised with the sturdiness of large MB
models, both the out of the box versions and the moc stuff, particularly given
the low reliance on large elements, and no reliance on technic wizardry to hold
it together.

But there is no doubt that Lego is in every way other than price a superior
brick.  I guess the test of choice is the balance of how much you desire the
Lego quality and how much you desire more bricks.

I'd still prefer to use Lego for building most anything, but I prefer building
great big stuff even more (having just picked up another Kitty Hawk and
Battleship to complete a small fighter carrier :-)

With that major decision sorted, I find my self free to enjoy the earthier
approach MB seems to take to themes.  The Alien Agency (AA) stuff is good fun,
and the new Dragons line, with its non-human dudes and some maritime equipment,
is also enjoyable.

The carrier will be commanded and the fighters piloted by the new non-human
dudes, with some slave AA human types for crew, and the glorious MB fighter from
AA to make up the fighter wing (4 or 8, not quite sure if I can rack them one
above the other in the hangar yet :-)

Still baldly going...
