That set, partially completed (the hull was about 4-5 rows of bricks high)
crumbled under its own weight when extended 1 foot off the edge of a table
without support. I consider that unacceptable adhesion.

I'm afraid that that's an unfortunate and (IME) non-representative example.
I've built simultaneously larger and flimsier structures that have stood up
quite well under their own weight, so something else seems to be at play in your
case.  Perhaps the set was exposed to heat prior to sale, or perhaps you got a
bad batch of bricks, but such crumbling simply doesn't mesh with my experience.
The Battleship set predated the Sea Wolf, and I was readily able to lift the
Battleship by its conning tower without any crumbling; that speaks of
more-than-adequate clutch power, to me.

FWIW, I miss Tyco.

I think my final analysis of Tyco is that the elements, colors, and overall
quality were great, but the set designs just didn't thrill me.  Still, I'd love
to have retail access to the pieces again.  They came and went during my Dark
Age, and it's been a sporadic quest since then.
