This is really worrisome to me that people are feeling less and less
like mentioning good opportunities. I know I had a similar feeling when
my posting about having been called by the Georgia outlet caused such a
ruckus (and for those who count such things, I never heard back from
them, I got nothing from that "deal").
On the flip side, I think one should always assume that if one posts an
incredible deal, people are going to buy for resale. It sucks if you
don't get your order in before they are all gone, but that's the way a
free market works. It can quickly correct for prices which are out of
whack (though I would note that it still hasn't succeeded in correcting
the price of the cyberslammer stuff... why places like Walmart who blow
out stock for pennies on the dollar still have copies of these sets, I
have no idea).
On another side, I can actually see a benefit to some of the
profiteering. In some ways, I'd rather see a fellow fan buy and resell
sets for a profit that he got for a bargain than some faceless corp like
Walmart get the bucks (by not blowing out the items). Of course I also
love folks like Lindsay Braun who can go into a store, find a stack of
sets on clearance, and talk the manager into taking the whole lot for
less, and then turning around and offering the sets for a little higher
to the rest of us. Because of that, I have had the opportunity to take
advantage of clearances which seem much fewer around here (Mike Walsh
has mentioned that the local LEGO rep told him that our area has the
highest volume in the region which probably contributes to the reduced
amount of clearance - though this year I actually got a decent amount of
stuff from Target clearances, as opposed to the almost nothing I saw in
NH and VT [the stores I stopped in the day after Christmas on the way
from my dad's house in MA to the condo in VT had almost NO LEGO left on
the shelves at all, hardly anything left to mark down - either they did
incredible before Christmas or it had been marked down and snatched up
real quickly]).
On the other other hand (you see, I'm from another world - take me to
your leader please), I do wish eBay would crack down on some of the less
savory things. If they are going to block people from selling US S@H
catalogs (with an actual legitimate reason - offering them to
non-Americans), they should block any other form of selling "information
on how to buy" (of course it also becomes problematical where to draw
the line - is it ok to sell a price guide or other collecting type
guide, which probably does contain "information on how to buy"?). I'd
also like to see them crack down on their rules about keyword stuffing
(especially the use of "like LEGO" in auctions for non-LEGO, their rules
clearly disallow such). I'd also like to see them allow folks to post
comments like: "Hey, that isn't a rare set, you can get it at S@H." (of
course one could argue why should they pay to dispense information for
someone else, but then it is in their best interest to create an
environment where people trust the sellers, and cutting down on some of
this kind of activity would help that trust [I wonder how many folks
have bought one of these "rare" sets, and then actually read the catalog
which comes with the set and realized they could order from S@H? Of
those who have bought a set which was shipped to them directly from S@H,
I wonder how many have realized how they have been duped when they saw
the S@H catalog enclosed with the order, not to mention the invoice <I'm
speculating that people have sold items where they then order the item
from S@H and have it delivered to the buyer>]).
