Lars, you have made my week with this posting! I wanted to thank you for
pursuing this project, getting help from the big guns. These results are
sooooo pretty and very encouraging.

Indeed. Other renderers may have an edge in creating images with unique,
artistic styles, but I should never have doubted that ray-tracing certainly
has what it takes to compete in the realism department. (Once again I have
brought shame to the world of Classic Space... or something)
I have been experimenting with using area lighting, focal-blur, and
radiosity (tsk tsk to those 3.5 haters! :P ) for a while, but I didn't
realize that such realistic results could be achieved by really pushing
these techniques to their limits. My radiosity settings were pretty
conservative and I only used as many lights as I could tolerate with respect
to the time it would take to render them. I figured "Well, that's about as
good as the image is going to look, increasing those values won't do much to
make it any better."
Also, the sky_sphere radiosity lighting technique is just awesome. Who
would have thought that a scene could be so bright without any light
sources?! :D And I have learned how a subtle* focus effect can add so much
to the sense of realism. All of these little pieces add up, tricking the
mind into thinking "Yeah, the expected elements are in place; This is a real
photo."
Based on the setup provided by JRG, I've made a test image of some space
minifigs: http://tubafrog.com/temp/morefigs.jpg
Now, here's my dilemma. I have actually come to appreciate the cartoony
style of my less-realistic renderings. The brighter colors, smooth textures,
softer lighting seem to project an idealized image of the Lego set rather
than a realistic one. Maybe that image is how I now remember those sets were
when I was young. Or rather how I *want* to remember them. The dreamy,
goofy, fantasy-ish vibe may be lost if everything gets too ultra-realistic.
Or maybe I'm just justifying my lousy pictures.
Anyways, I love having that option available to me. These techniques will
allow me to add a touch of realism if I decide that's what I need. I can't
wait to get on with more experimentation!
Thanks again!
* nevermind the complete lack of subtlety in my sample image!
