So - if you have something to say, say it in a way that won't gravely
offend people who are sitting on the other side of the fence.

Always good advice!  Yes!

EVERYONE I talked to about this debate, in person and online, has been
very upset by it.  They also wish this debate would die.

IMO, no debate here deserves to die so long as people are still being calm
and principled and the debate is taking place in the most appropriate group
(often .off-topic.debate).

The .off-topic.debate are is _for_ debates.  It's can be for UGLY debates
(provided that people are still being calm and principled, of course).  If
what's talked about in .off-topic.debate upsets someone, they should stop
reading that group.  If a debate starts in a regular group, and it upsets
someone, they should kindly ask people to move heated discussions to
.off-topic.debate.  If the debate is still on-topic and shouldn't be moved,
people should be *extra* considerate to the readership of that group.
