Seems the person from the third example got a little pissy in his
listing.  Oh well.  The sad thing is the loser is still managing to
sell his set at a good price even after being such a whiney-butt in
his listing.

I thought his tirade had some valid points, though clouded in negative
emotions.  (Thanks for pointing me back there to look, BTW.)

To paraphrase, he made the following points:

   1. Apologized to his bidders for the non-functional image.

   2. Thought he'd seen such links before and thus assumed they were OK.

   3. Searched the site for any mention of guidelines or usage notes about
image linking, didn't find anything.  Assumed that lack of explicit
notice against such links indicated an OK to make such links
      (presumably in light of #2).

   4. Would have preferred a personal e-mail drawing attention to his misuse
of the image rather than a surprising "nasty graphic."

   5. (Presumably) believes that duplicating of information on the Internet
      is wasteful.

   6. Does not have his own server or access to personal space for posting/
      hosting such images.

Distilled like this, all of these are tangible concerns which are likely to
resurface again and again among the general Internet community.  I can't do
anything about #4, but the others are somewhat addressable.  In particular,
for example, #3 is fairly easy to address quickly and directly.  I added a
little line of text at the bottom of the sets-DB pages -- it says...

Please do not make direct links to image files on this website.

...which is a good start.

#6 is not valid. Or at least it was not. There are sites that exist specifically to host auction images, which do so for free. (I think they tack an advert on the bottom of the image or something). (25 years ago, 8-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

(...) Oh, I think a _Nasty_ graphic would have been more fun. alt.binaries.images.tasteless - the seller would have really had something to whine about if you had been out to harm him. (25 years ago, 11-Jun-99, to lugnet.admin.general, lugnet.off-topic.fun)

(...) Yeah, I don't think they can change it after submitting, but at least from now on they should be able to tell immediately that their theft of server space and bandwidth isn't going to work.
