Suz:
I'll start small and work my way in...
While it's not a big issue - the use of CSS could help y'all maintain
uniformity of appearance across all the pages of the site with a small,
reusable bit of "code" -- but then again, I don't really see a problem with
uniformity of appearance in any case. I like CSS because of the way it can
help maintain tighter layout control and give better feedback responses with
different hyperlink styles. A tiny issue to be sure.
In the first mock-up I really like the use of the larger image of the
minifigures wearing Lugnet T-shirts, that's a must in my view. It draws the
user in and sets a good tone. Do I have to point out that smileys can melt
anyone's heart?
Speaking of great graphics, I'd like to see the image
at:http://www.lugnet.com/admin/logo/lugnet-hex-fade.gif
placed somewhere more prominently on the site. And if not, perhaps it could
be made into a promotional keychain or something.
In the second mock-up, where you list: "guide," "community," and "market" it
seemed to me that the market "symbol" probably should have been blue in
keeping with Lugnet's logo colors. Instead of the circle against a color
field, did you consider taking apart Lugnet's logo? What I mean is using
the yellow "r" shape, the red checkmark shape, and the blue arrow-like
shapes as the modular symbols for the above categories -- this might
symbolically suggest the components of which Lugnet is comprised and
described by said categories. I dunno, just a thought -- I'd have to see it
first. The newsgroup thing can be handled as described below.
I wanted to inquire as to the purpose of the official homepage vs. the
newsgroup homepage because I think it's actually possible to combine them
and dispense with the duel homepages model. As it is now, I rarely use the
homepage URL (www.lugnet.com) and almost always go directly to
(news.lugnet.com) instead. I can understand that you may see the official
homepage as a kind of portal page that some people might use as their
browser homepage but I think the reality is that most people use something
else instead -- either the default page or a search engine page would be my
top guesses. Anyway, I would tend to think that everything could be on one
longer vertically scrolling page that maintains a 550-575 pixel width as a
standard design guide but that might also resize dependant on the user's
screen size (in the main I am merely championing the 600x800 or slightly
smaller thing). You would still have "Top Stories" and such, but after the
main links but before the footer you could put the newsgroup links and the
first 5 most recent posts from the various newsgroups. I noted your desire
to do something like this by including a "popular areas" set of links. I am
just saying: don't go small, go big!
The sidebar layout, if used, could contain the search tools, top stories,
and the new members list. If you wanted to take the sidebar design out, I
would get rid of the links in the upper right corner and put the search
tools there, I'd put the newsgroups where I already explained it could go,
and I'd use the space where you have "S@H Specials" and use it for the "Top
Stories" instead -- the S@H Specials could regularly go there as a featured
item of the top stories.
